Opus Dei - secret Catholic society per Matt Lauer on Today Show NBC on Nov. 4 morning

Matt Lauer announced a few moments ago that in the Today Show (NBC) episode for news today was going to be a story about the Roman Catholic Church’s secret society called “Opus Dei.”

Lovely. :mad:

If you’re not doing anything else in the next hour or so (until 9 AM when the Today Show ends – Pacific time – where I am) please see if you can watch that little piece that he’s doing on our (the Roman Catholic Church’s) “secret society” named “Opus Dei.”

Right. “Secret society.” Sure… NOT!!!

Please let me know what you think about Opus Dei being slandared and mis-represented like this… without Lauer even saying anything more yet until he interviews whomever he’s going to interview.

P.S. Earlier this week in their series of “Mysterious Religions” they covered Kabbala… and Mormons.

Unfortunately, Lauer didn’t “get” that when the Mormon man he was interviewing answered that yes, Mormons believe in “Jesus Christ” that the “Jesus Christ” that the Mormons believe in is NOT the SAME Jesus Christ that we Christians know and believe for who He is.

Sigh.

I found offensive a few things that Matt said this morning: (1) He said that it is a "secret society of Catholics, under the Pope’s authority, and that it is referred to in the DaVinci Code; (2) He compared it with a few off-beat faiths & cults (3) He said it is know for harsh punishment and beatings (4) He said that after the DaVinci Code came out, the Church assigned a Cardinal to do “damage control”.

He did have an Opus Dei Priest priest on that gave a very good explanation of what Opus Dei is.
 
Ok - so, does anyone have a website and/or an email address where we can register our legit complaints to NBC about the bogus ‘reporting’ job Matt Lauer did on Opus Dei?

If it’s a secret, how come they know so much about it ? does’nt sound like a very well kept secret to me. :ehh:
 
Geesh…I guess if Matt ever gets tired of NBC he’d be very welcome at ABC with Babs (Barbara Walters)…wonder if Bill Donohue knows about the program this morning…would love to see a response from him on this one.

The Church must be experiencing a new evangelization with all the attacks on it lately…St. Michael must be puttin’ in some heavy duty OT these days! :angel1:
 
What they mean by calling it a “secret society” is that Opus Dei won’t release the names of its members. Matt L. even asked the guest why O.D. wouldn’t give out the members’ names. After all, such secrecy clearly means that the organization is deceptive and wicked, just like the DaVinci Code claims.Here are a couple other “secret” societies that I know of off the top of my head. They also don’t release member’s names:

The YMCA (you should see the corporal mortification that goes on here)
HyVee Birthday Club (my daughter belongs, but don’t tell anyone because it’s a secret cult)
 
I watched this interview and I thought that the priest did a fine job in explaining. I thought that Matt looked like an idiot.😦
 
I wish I had the courage to be as holy as the men and women who are members of opus dei. I find Josemaria Escriva’s writings to be some of the most inspirational stuff I’ve ever read. Anyone who thinks Opus Dei is some sort of evil cult should really take a long hard look at their ideas about good and evil.

What freaks me out is Lauer was stating with a tone of authority that it was all explained in the Da Vinci Code book by Brown.

At the end of the interview, the expert (Father Michael Barrett) went through the summary of his points – the history of the Opus Dei, support by Pope John VI, Pope JP 2’s cannonization of St. JoseMaria Escriva where 350,000 people were in St. Peter’s Square for his canonization, and how Opus Dei could hardly be called “secretive” –

You could see Lauer relaxing and being quiet and letting Father Barrett give his succinct, direct, and in a non-defensive tone the facts…

The last words on the “interview” (I call it “interrogation”) of Father Michael Barret, the Opus Dei “expert” was that of the “expert’s” response to the Lauer’s concluding question…asked by Lauer with a gentle, subdued (and respectful) smile:

“So your message to the people out there watching – the DaVinci Code: it’s just a book.”

The expert: “It’s pure fiction.”

Lauer: “Father Michael Barrett. Thanks so much. It’s been enlightening.”

Father Barrett: “Thank you very much.”

Lauer: “I appreciate it.”

Father Barrett: “You’re welcome.”

Lauer: “It’s 51 after the hour. Up next – Prince Charles and Camilla…”
 
The only thing I did find a little strange or creepy as a new Catholic was the odd object they showed on the wall that resembled a torture device. I did not catch what it was called, or what exactly its purpose is/was. Do some of this group believe in inflicting pain on themselves as some sort of attempt at purity? If so, reminds me of our more fanatical brothers in the Islamic faith, but I’d be interesed in other folks’ understanding of these instruments.
 
Does anyone even watch NBC anymore? Their reporting is really bad, and I don’t believe I’ve even tuned into NBC in months (can’t remember the last time I did).
