Is anyone out there a member of Opus Dei? I frankly don’t know much about it, but I’d like to learn.

There was a thread on Opus Dei which had a number of good links. I was curious about Opus Dei as well and learned a lot from those links. Do a Search on Opus Dei, clicking on Search up above on the tool bar.

Are you a member of Opus Dei? Are you any where near Southern California?

I’m a cooperator (sort of a “junior member”). I’m in San Diego.

You’re the first person I’ve met (heard of) in the area - I’m in the Inland Empire.

So, do you go to the Tilden Center?

What’s a cooperator?

Would you be more comfortable if we took this off line? Send me a private message and I’ll send you my email address.

I don’t go to the Tilden Center. There’s an Opus Dei priest who comes down to San Diego twice a month to hear confessions, give evenings of recollection, etc.

I think of cooperators this way: If Opus Dei were a baseball team, cooperators would be the minor leaguers. They make a commitment to “cooperate” with the works of Opus Dei, but they don’t have the same spiritual requirements that regular members do. The only requirements are that they pray for the Work every day and make a financial contribution according to their means. They don’t even have to be Catholic, although the vast majority of them are.

I don’t have a problem discussing this in a public venue like this–as long as you don’t ask me anything that’s under the seal of confession!

I’m a Cooperator, too, and I think of myself more as a season ticket holder - committed, but not a member of the team.

I am in essence a Deacon with no faculties due to my divorce. My annulment is in process. Can I be part of Opus Dei in any fashion? I would like to learn more

Wow,yesterday I was just searching up this organization and now this post just propped out.

Opus Dei exists to provide formation for anyone. One needn’t even be a Catholic to receive the benefits of this formation.

This formation spans many types. Human formation (improving human virtues for the benefit of others), doctrinal formation, spiritual formation (how to maintain a presence of God during our ordinary day, how to pray better, how to get more out of the sacraments by putting more into the reception of the sacraments), apostolic formation (how to be a better friend, how to help others come closer to God and His Church).

“Membership” is not something to focus on…but instead focus on how to take advantage of the formation offered via various means that Opus Dei provides…recollections, retreats, reading, spiritual direction, talks, etc.
