Opus Dei

I have been to several Opus Dei recollections in my area. I like these recollections because I find them to be spiritual and friendly. Also, I like the Opus Dei people that I know.

But my question is: What is your opinion of Opus Dei? I have seen positive books about the organization and also negative books. I just can’t figure it all out. Is this organization a valuable organization for the Catholic Church? Does it do good work?

Personally, I can find nothing negative based on my experiences with the organization except that they don’t allow men and women to get together in the organization. What are your comments?

I have no experience with Opus Dei myself, but from being around these fora, it appears that any negative website about them is just blatantly false.

The Opus Dei folks I’ve been involved with are all top-notch guys, faithful Catholics and solid family men. Couldn’t recommend them any higher.

In my experience, however, their priests in spiritual direction tend to suggest a rather direct method of confronting manifest public sinners you encounter in your life. A method that I’m not sure would be very effective at all. More likely to get you punched in the mouth than anything, in my opinion.

But they just suggest it. Doesn’t mean you have to carry through with the suggestion.

Another question from me: What exactly is Opus Dei? I’ve heard of them but I haven’t any idea who they are.

Basically, Opus Dei is a Catholic organization involved in reminding people of Christ’s message that he wants everyone to be holy-- be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.

And that this is can be done without having to become a monk or a priest, because sanctity is about friendship with God, and the good God is the one who sanctifies us, despite all our faults and miseries, as long as we deal with God closely as a son does to his father…

All the ordinary events of each day, even up to the most materials things, are ways of reaching God, because everything has been sanctified by God who became flesh, Jesus Christ.
