My mom wanted to send him money for one of his “special Bibles” that really wasn’t worth the $50.00 he was asking…I talked her out of it…she really was taken in at times by the TV Evangelists…I commend him to the Light.

I used to watch him on TV when he was in the tent. I never felt good about him even when I was young. I had a friend in a wheelchair that went to him, he came back in the same wheelchair.
On one of the networks today they ran a tape with Roberts claiming that he had brought many people back from the dead.
He reminded me of the TV evangelist in the movie “Oh God”. In the movie John Denver was told by God to approach the evangelist and tell him to go back to being a shoe salesman.

I’ve seen him on T.V., but I must admit I never could sit through more than 5 min. of his show. I could be wrong, but he just seemed “fake” to me. I’m not saying he was, but it just seemed that way to me. His show didn’t do a thing for me.

Didn’t he lock himself up in a tower for a year on His self-named University Campus stating the God had told him to stay up there unless Oral could raise one-million dollars?
And his son takes over Oral Roberts University and they have a weekly “Hour of Power” healing broadcast on T.V with purportedly tens of healings. Do the students of Oral Roberts University actually believe that miracles are being done right there and then by Roberts’ son? Heck, even anti-Catholic John Hagee sent his son to Oral Roberts U for education before the son takes over from Hagee Senior.
Why has there never been a medically documented and reviewed case of one healing from Roberts or from televangelist Bennie Hinn for that matter? The Catholic Church puts great effort into medically determining miracles required from sainthood. Where are Roberts’ lists?
In all honesty, is this all a great con job on the part of these televangelists or are they sincere? I believe they may have started off their careers with the latter position but ended up acting later as con artists. Why do American Christian Fundamentalists go for this stuff or send their kids to their universities. I believe Hinn for sure never fully disclosed his full earnings and expenses. And what ever happened to Ernest Angley? He used to really pack them in, but I guess Hinn is the big salesman now.

I went to churches like that alot. Most of the people are truly faithful, but the pastor is usually crooked.

No, but then I live overseas. We do occasionally get fundamentalists setting up over here, a bit like Roberts, but Australians are far more cynical when it comes to religion. An appeal for $8 million dollars or “I’m dead” would get a lot of jokes about it was an expensive obituary or something like it.
We’re probably too cynical actually.

The man was a huckster who used people’s gullibility to make a buck. He is in desperate need of our prayers now.
As I have never met the man, attended his university, or seen a single message I can’t say he was legit or a fraud. However, I would like to point out a few things to everyone. He did draw people to him. He was charismatic, and could speak to people in ways that helped him amass a fortune as well as create a university. These are not small or insignificant things especially in this day and age.
When it comes to healing not everyone can or does get healed no matter what faith one belongs too. Did Jesus not say that it was the faith of the people that healed them? I’m not trying to make an argument. However I am trying to point out faith in God may be the key to healing for some and sometimes God may have other plans for those that are not healed even if they themselves can’t see it. Just a thought.
When it comes to healing not everyone can or does get healed no matter what faith one belongs too. Did Jesus not say that it was the faith of the people that healed them? I’m not trying to make an argument. However I am trying to point out faith in God may be the key to healing for some and sometimes God may have other plans for those that are not healed even if they themselves can’t see it. Well, I did get a chuckle now and again at the jokes about his unfortunate name.
Other than that, I just thought he was a con artist. He made no difference in my life, other than that he taught me to be cautious with religion salesmen.

I can only imagine the uproar if someone called a famous and very visible Catholic a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Be careful what you say. The post asked if he had an affect on you, not whether you thought he was a fraud destined for hell.

Just because he is a famous protestant doesn’t place him beyond reproach. If you ask me if he had an affect on my life then the only answer I can give is that he taught me to be more cautious of con artists. I don’t know if he is destined for hell but I certainly pray that he isn’t.

Did I say he was beyond reproach? No. It’s the effect he had on your life, well I’d say that might just be a good thing. There is nothing wrong with saying that. I think we just have to be careful when passing judgement because sometimes we condemn instead of judging the fruit. That’s all I was saying.

I had limited associations with charismatic christians across the Tiber, so my memory of Roberts is pretty much like that of other people.
I know he was the last of the ‘sawdust trail’ travelling evangelists from the early part of the 20th century. If he had remained one of the many obscure evangelists of that era, he might be more fondly remembered.
But, like so many, money and fame took hold on him and his son.
