Peggy indicated previously in this forum that The Roman Missal DOES NOT ALLOW for the faithful to raise their hands in the “orans” position (or hold hands) during Mass. Such posture is reserved for the priest.

In the Liturgy forum, however, many people claim that the Orans position is permitted becuase the posture is not one reserved for the priest.

Can you clarify?

Dear s,

I know of a bishop who encourages the use of the orans position to keep people from joining hands at the Our Father. Actually, the General Instruction of the Roman Missal does not proscribe either action. True, it doesn’t forbid them. It doesn’t forbid the faithful from standing at attention and saluting either. There are countless actions that it does not forbid. This is itself, just not justify the use of them.
