Now they just had the annual Orbi et Urbi. Did Francis give the Catholic world an indulgence? If it’s still good I want to go to confession this Saturday and use it if possible.
 
Yes, he did promise an indulgence under the usual conditions. He said that this blessing and indulgence applied to all who viewed it on TV, so even though it is rather late, I would think it is still valid.

Nevertheless, you can obtain a plenary for several other devotions at any time - reading scripture for half an hour, saying the rosary in church, making a half hour visit to the Blessed Sacrament, for a few ideas. (Also, under the usual conditions)

Usually it is only for the day - Easter. The broadcasts of the Pope’s message are on different time zones, so we may get a repeat later in the day. I would be leery about trusting a taped message to have the same spiritual effect several weeks later. I would say no.

He also gives this special message to begin the New Year, so you have an opportunity then, as well. Don’t be too upset, since as I told you, there are many other ways of obtaining a plenary indulgence. Did you miss the one for Divine Mercy Sunday? 😉

Yeah. I never get to Mass on Sundays. The buses don’t run. I have been spending the night at my Mother’s place so She comes in from work 6-8 am. So I get to Mass on Tuesday mornings. Transportation is a bit limited. If I can get there in the week I can always go before the monstrance. There is a site www.savior.org that is a great place to view the host. IDK if that would count towards a plenary indulgence though.

How about reading scripture at home for a half hour? It must be consecutive, not broken up into 15 minute divided segments.

As for viewing the live presence on line, I’m not aware that this qualifies for the plenary indulgence. You might need to ask a priest or the USCCB who published the Manual of Indulgences.

So can I get a copy of the “Manual of Indulgences” from the USCCB’s website. I’ve never seen, but never looked either. There’s also a text called GRIM. IDK what that is. Maybe something for Priests only. And not laity.

Yes there is that, the scripture reading. I seem to remember something about 20 days after and before confession the action is to be done. One confession serves for several indulgences.

I have downloaded a pdf of a copy of “The manual of Indulgences” that was written or published in 1864 or thereabouts. Would this text be out of date? It’s certainly not the the modern paperback version that is for sale on the usccb’s website. Wasn’t that before Vatican II ? That date escapes me.

I would say your on-line version is outdated since it is well over 100 years old.

USCCB sells their own manual, but I found that Amazon sells it somewhat cheaper. That’s where I got my copy, and I was never sorry for buying it. You cannot believe how many wonderful indulgences there are!
 
Here is the wording on the Papal blessing on pg. 47 of the Manual:

A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly receive a blessing imparted either by the Supreme Pontiff to Rome and the World (Urbi et Orbi), or by the bishop to whose care the faithful are entrusted in accordance with Norm 7,2 of this Manual, even if, because of reasonable circumstances, they are unable to be present physically at the sacred rite, provided that they follow it devoutly as it is broadcast LIVE by television or radio.

So that should answer your original question.
