The issue of female ordination has beset the Roman Catholic church for decades. But increasingly, the Vatican is facing a revolt on the issue, even as it cracks down.

On three continents: Europe, Australia and America, outspoken Catholic priests are defying this strict Vatican tenet. In the U.S., a longstanding American is this one more test for Holy See.

Or, is the church facing a revolt that my force dissenters to the fore?

This hour On Point: Rome, and the challenge to expand the priesthood.

Guests:

Eileen Di Franco, a member of the group Roman Catholic Womenpriests, she was ordained as a priest in 2006 and has a Masters in Divinity.

Rev. Roy Bourgeois, a priest for 39 years with the Maryknoll Order.

Pia de Solenni, a corresponding member of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, she received her doctorate in sacred theology summa cum laude from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, Rome.

It will never happen.

The priesthood is about life itself. Men and women compliment each other. The Jewish tradition never had women priests. Christ did not institute women apostles. Each gender has its own genius and purpose.

What is bad is implying there is something defective in women so because of that we can’t be priests.

The Pope already made his statement that WOMEN cannot become priests.

WHat is so taxing about this? If bishops are ordaining women priests, I do not know how they would be assigned a parish when it was made very lucid: WOMEN CANNOT BECOME PRIESTS. You have to accept this from the Holy Father; why fight this, when you know is essence, it is not going to alter the situation?

What is so taxing about what the Pope said–he made it very lucid.

JESUS I TRUST IN YOU

And I am a man and I want to get pregnant and give birth to a child !! And I want to be the Holy Mary ! And I want to be Mother Theresa of Calcutta.

By the way, I want to be Jesus Christ.

I want, I want, I want. As if ordination of woman priests depended on the wantings of the women or men.

I am amazed at the curriculum of the quote women: “Master”, “Summa cum Laude”, as if this would give them more curriculum to be priests. The Apostles were fishermen and the seers in Fatima little ignorant shepherds.

Why some women think that to be a priest is an honor or a position more elevated than the position where women are puzzles me. Is it the boring task of hearing for hours the same sins in confession? Is it preparing a sermon and preaching to an audience that is looking at the watch and thinking what lunch will be? Is it the lights and glimmer of worn out vestments, hot in the middle of Summer, Cold in Winter, and not practical at all?

It is a puzzle for me. I think Feminism should be left where it belongs. The Church is not democracy, it is Royalty and our King is Jesus Christ, who chose to be the Mother of God … a woman !!!

This is a radio show. It’s running right now and supposedly we can listen to it online after it’s conclusion.

Not particularly hopeful on any actual content. The comments running seem to indicate that it’s nothing more than a 2 against 1 rant against the Church and her teaching. 🤷

small correction for NPR
Eileen Di Franco, a member of the group Roman Catholic Womenpriests, who claims she was ordained as a priest in 2006, in spite of the ordination being neither valid nor licit, and has a Masters in Divinity but no actual formation or training for the priesthood.
Rev. Roy Bourgeois, a priest for 39 years with the Maryknoll Order, who was recently excommunicated for his participation in the illicit faux ordinations.

I have always believed that someday, the newchurch would ordain women. This is yet another reason why I went to and stayed with the (traditional) Roman Catholic Church and faith.

I left the newchurch in the late 1970s, having only been to maybe 2 novus ordos. A few years later, a friend (who stayed with the newchurch) told me they now had “altar girls”. I refused to believe him, so he took me to his church and I saw them.

That was when I realized the path the newchurch was headed on, and I knew that women priests would someday be inevitable.

There’s no such thing as a “female Catholic priest.” The discussion is over before it begins.

All we can do is know that the idea of female priests should never happen and then pray that these bishops and priest who choose to advocate this will see the error in their way and also never reach a position of power and authority in the church.

Is this newchurch some kind of denomination or are you being derogatory about the Catholic Church?

Female Altar servers are premitted. Female priests are not.

To be a little charitable, the OP and the poster about “newchurch” are not Catholic, so they are probably not aware that the female priesthood is not in any way possible.
Maybe the OP found this newsbyte and wasn’t aware that from time to time a heretical priest or sect “ordains” women.
I think it’s a common misconception of non-catholics. They assume that the “laws can just be changed” or that heretical, ousted priests are still Catholic. Perhaps it is because in many other denominations, that is exactly what happens. Laws change, denominations change names, etc. etc.

Marla,

Yes, I checked first. The OP has over 4000 posts on CAF and has been here since 2004. I don’t think this is the first he’s heard of this.

The “newchurch” poster has several posts about his/her conversion to the Catholic Church decades ago.

Simply because these feminists forget that what we do, even if that “doing” means just dusting the pews in preparation for Mass, is in the spirit of Christ,

Will never happen. Men (priests) stand in the place of Jesus at the Mass. People who push for women to be priests are applying secular beliefs and arguments. Men alone are called to the priesthood, not women…period! It is not a right, but a calling. More important, to state the CC is wrong for not allowing women is to claim Our Lord Jesus is also wrong and old fashion.

Western culture has re-evaluated the role of women in society. These societal changes do not and will not have any bearing on a male-only priesthood. The Church changes society, not the other way around.

Corki! You showed me something! I’m such a noob. I never thought to look at the join date, or previous postings. I just saw the religion and gave them the benefit of the doubt. I appreciate your research, and your discernment.
Thanks!
Blessings

This whole women-priest thing is getting sooooo old. It will never happen. It’s not supposed to happen. If it was, Christ would have had a female apostle or two. Do they think it was a accident or a coincidence that all apostles were men? Do they think Christ was an idiot, and they know better?
Sigh. I am so tired of it. I’d like to shake women like that Eileen Di Franco until their teeth rattle. You want to be a female priest? Go join some ultra-cool new-age new-fangled bogus cult religion, and stop aggravating us Catholics.

it still baffles me at times why a person who is so outrightly and adamently opposed to Catholic teaching wants to remain Catholic…why would a person want to remain in an organization that they believe teaches so much error?
