We have generally maintained our home clean and orderly. Our daughter, who has been brought up in that environment, is married to a nice young man who is a staunch Catholic even though his family are just nominal Catholics.
Unfortunately, his family maintains their home very poorly and he has brought in part of that baggage into his marriage. When we or our daughter try to explain to him the importance of keeping the home clean and tidy and well ordered, he argues where in the Bible it says so.
I would appreciate help in finding scriptural support for leading an orderly life.

1 Corinthians 14:33 “For God is not a God of disorder”.

1 Corinthians 14:40 “But be sure that everything is done properly and in order.”

The bible also says:
“Do everything without complaining or arguing.” Philippians 2:14

Unless they’re living with you, it’s probably best if you stay out of it.

Newlyweds are going to have some friction until they find a balance they can both live with.

My two cents. Or two Rupees, whatever… 🙂

Isn’t this better kept between your daughter and son-in-law? I would not get involved in this argument. Besides, people’s ideas of “order” and “disorder” are highly subjective.

Thank you for those verses.

I completely agree in theory and we generally do keep out of it. The circumstances here are a bit different. We live in India and my daughter and SIL are in Canada. My wife is currently with them because my daughter just delivered (my first grandchild) on March 2nd and she is there to support them during this tough phase. She just got drawn into the discussion because she was present and was directly addressed at one point. She just mentioned the 1Cor 14:33 verse to him.
Let me emphasize that we have an excellent relationship with my SIL and he is open to our (name removed by moderator)uts. It is just that it would help if we could provide him with scriptural motivation to turn away from disorder.

Dude has a newborn and his mother-in-law just moved in. Is he from a culture that would welcome this as decreasing stress or one where this would add stress? If he was raised in standard western culture, this would not be the time to address foibles. It would be better for MIL to help by cleaning the dishes while the newlyweds hash out their own problems.

I am sorry for my choice of words in the first post of this thread. This is not actually a constant argument. It was just one discussion.
I think I erred in using the present tense to express myself. When I read it again I realize it implies a constant bickering which it certainly is not. My only reason for posting here was because he said “Where does the Bible say the home needs to be kept clean and orderly?”

In marriage, both people have to do their equal share of chores.

But there is also a balance between what is clean and what is not. Some things can be left out for a little while, especially if you’re working on something. But dirty clothes, dirty dishes and/or trash are 100% unacceptable. Some people (sadly) are used to living like that, and it can lead to roaches, rats, bad odors, etc.

I also agree that it’s best to stay out of things. They need to work out problems on their own. Marriage will bring lots of problems (human beings aren’t perfect) and it’s best for them to learn to work things out.

Don’t go into trying to justify your oppinion via the Bible.
Cleanliness and order to a certain extent is common sense and charity.
Its that simple.
