Order of Service Christian Burial - Help!

My mother had me draw up a missal for my father’s funeral mass. This is done and has been approved by their priest (my parents home is 2000 miles away from me). The Fr. told my mother tonight that family remarks may be made before the start of the funeral Mass or after. Can anyone tell me if the Mass starts at the procession? Does it end after the Final Commendation? I need to print these missals out and wont be able to contact the priest before doing so with our travel

The order is Procession, Intro Rites, Opening Prayer, 1st reading, Responsorial Psalm, 2nd Reading, Gospel Acclamation, Gospel, Homily, General Intercessions, Liturgy of the Eucharist, Preparation of the gifts, Eucharistic Prayer, Lord’s Prayer, Communion and Final Commendation. I would love to know where to list the remarks for the begging and end of mass so I can give the option to my mom! Thank you for your help -

Regarding your question, practice varies so much from church to church or depending on how the priest interprets the norms. Here are some of the times I have seen family remarks included.

1: Family member welcomes the congregation and speaks abbout the deceased before the procession.

2: I have also seen this done after the procession, when the entrance hymn has finished, but before the priest begins "In the name of the father …

3: You see it many times after communion but pefore the prayer after communion. This is during the mass so your priest would appear to exclude this option.

4: The Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell are not part of the Mass. The mass ends with the prayer after communion and the short blessing “Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God”. Sometimes the family remarks occur here before Final commendation.

5: I have also seen it happen after the priest has left the sanctuary and processed to the sacristy. In this case I do not know if it was on the advice of the priest ot what the family chose to do.

Perhaps others my know the normal custon in this regard in your area

I’m sorry for your loss. I will pray for the repose of your father’s soul.

I’m (fortunately) not familiar with the Ordinary Form’s ceremonies for funerals, but I have read up on the Extraordinary Form’s requiem ceremonies. I know that it’s not the EF, however, “mutual enrichment” might apply in this case. In the EF, a “funeral oration” is delivered before the Commendation, but after the Mass. Hope that helps!
