I know three related women involved in the Order of the Eastern Star. I am Catholic and have no interest in joining but I have researched and found that Catholics can be excommunicated if they do join. I was wondering if anyone knew of their attitudes towards Catholics. Do Catholics consider OES a cult or just another religion? I don’t know much about them and what I find online is vague and all the same.

I was an Eastern Star many years ago. This was years before I converted. We had a couple of Catholic ladies in chapter. I am friends with a lady now who is Catholic and Eastern Star. I never heard anything anti-Catholic while I was a member.

Never heard of them but the name itself screams paganism/cult. But that’s just a personal opinion having nothing to go on other than the name of their religion/group/sect

I have known some of these ladies from the Eastern Star, as well as their husbands who are Masons. I have found them to be very fine people. This is my own opinion though, and I can’t speak for the Catholic Church on such matters.

Actually it’s referring the star of the Bethlehem. Jesus was born under the star of the East.

Thank you, all. I was just curious because I didn’t know much about them and actually never heard of them until people I know joined. The women I know are very nice and honorable people as well. They do not say much about what they do or what they believe and give vague answered if asked.

Yes, membership in this group, the Freemasons, etc. is absolutely forbidden to Catholics.
While these groups might not directly propagate anti-Catholic messages, their practices of false ecumenism (note that I am not saying that ALL ecumenism is bad) and other customs that, yes, in the words of another poster, “scream paganism” are decidedly unfit for a Catholic to take part in.
There are many excellent websites online that explain in detail why Catholics cannot and should not even want to join such societies. One such is as follows:

consecration.com/default.aspx?id=46

If one is intrigued by the “secrecy” or the sense of community expressed by the group, why not look into the Archangelati (archangelati.webs.com, you can also find them on Twitter)? Or how about the Opus Dei? These two groups are explicitly Catholic and would foster devotion to Our Lord much more so than would the Masons.

God bless you and all those on this page.
