Who has an order of priests who staff your church? How do you think they differ from the parish priest who is not a member of an Order?

Not I but I sure wish we did.

The monastery I attend is run by the Benedictines but not a parish.

I wish I knew of a parish that was run by an order.🙂

my parish had had Diocesean priests since the beginning, but for the past three years we have been staffed by Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) from India. although it is hard to understand them at times, but yet there is a presence surrounding them that the diocesean priests didn’t have.

I’d say they both have their own gifts and their own personalities, but its been my opinion that the order priests seem more focused and not always running like diocesean priests are.

My parish is ran by the Franciscans. I have also belonged or gone to parishes ran by the Passionists and Benedictines.

I once heard a Benedictine Priest say that when it gets down to it they tend to minister in a different way than diocesean Priests. He didn’t go into alot of detail but he did say that living in a community tends to take the rough edges out and that those that do live in a community have not been ‘cow-towed’ to like diocesean priests have many times.

It was interesting I thought, and I could see his point although I can’t say I’ve experienced either one enough to say if it’s true or not.

Wow I am impressed I did not know there where parishes out here that were run by orders.

There are likely a number of such parishes in your diocese that are staffed by religious priests, but you are simply unaware of it. If you would like to tell me the name of your diocese, I can tell you which parishes are handled by religious or priestly communities.

My parish has always been staffed by the Conventual Franciscan Friars. I think they tend to be more humble than the diocesan priests I have known, and definitely more willing to immerse themselves in their work. They welcome people knocking on the rectory door and asking questions. The pastor didn’t blink once when I asked to be enrolled in the Brown Scap… I had a nasty experience at a previous parish: asked the pastor to bless a few medals. He looked at me like I had proffered a dead raccoon and asked me if I had mental problems. Seriously. I think the mantilla was off-putting.

we have the Viatorians staff our Church, first church in america to have viatorians (founded in the 1850’s)

havent liked many of the past priests, their views/preaching havent always been orthodox. but our pastor is slowly trying to implement a more solemn liturgy and he’s orthodox.

umm but yeah, since the other church near me is diocesan priests and that parish is goin WAY WAY too modern (most of the people are comin on over to my parish) i only go there for saturday morning masses (since my parish doesnt have one, just a communion service) i really cant make a far comparison on a broad scale.
i wish i could say i was impressed by both staffs, but im not really.

realized something very important today after mass.
sometimes it feels like all you have is the Eucharist.
and that is enough for me.
anyone ever feel they get more out of a weekday mass then Sundays?

anyway… just some thoughts

A lot of times priests who are member of orders have different policies than diocesan priests.

My grandmother, who died many years ago, was impressed by the fact that the Franciscan priests at St. Aug’s here in Pittsburgh required less of a stipend to say masses for the dead than diocesan priests did.

My childhood parish had a “branch office” of the Glenmarys, but was an archdiocesan parish. It was a big switch to a Redemptorist parish as a teenager!!! There was no priest shortage at the first parish, but wow!!! The Redemptorists kept the place supplied with ranks and ranks of priests!!!

Right now, we Benedictines as our “back-up” priests when Father has more than he can handle, has to be out of town or gets the flu.

Does anyone has Paulist Fathers? I don’t think there are many of them.
