Ordinary form private masses

Masses by the priest alone (so called “private Masses”) happen quite frequently. Because the priest is there by himeself (with God, the saints and angels, and spiritually the whole Church, of course), no one else sees it–that’s the nature of the event. Just because people aren’t seeing them is not the same thing as saying that they aren’t happening, or that they are a rare occurance. Priests just don’t make an issue of it in conversation, unless the subject just happens to come up. For my part, I’ve spent more time discussing the issue here on this thread than I ever did in-person.

There are many priests out there who say a private Mass on their day off. The parish bulletin simply reads that there is no Mass on whatever day (if there’s only one priest at the parish); the priest still walks over to the church and says Mass, but it’s unscheduled and unannounced. After all, it would make no sense to put in the bulletin “Father will be saying a private Mass on Wednesday at 8:00 AM if anyone wants to come” Of course not; it would read “Mass, Wednesday 8:00” Now, sometimes we do in fact see that sort of thing, maybe with a retired priest who lives nearby–but again, it wouldn’t be a private Mass because someone else is there.

I was once in a similar situation for a few years. There was a retired priest who lived only a few doors down from the church (very handy, let me tell you because I was by myself). Although it wasn’t in the bulletin, he said his own Mass in the church chapel everyday at the same time. Most of the time, a few of his friends would join him (3 or 4). If no one else showed up that day, he still said Mass.

But remember folks, just because it’s not announced, and just because it doesn’t come up on conversation, does not mean it isn’t happening. It’s quite common.

Hypothetical situation: A priest desires to say Mass in the OF Form by himself privately at a side altar of a church. He does not have any other minister or server to assist him in the Mass. How can he go about doing this? Can he say the Mass?

How would the Mass proceed in such a case? I mean how would the Mass be said as compared to a Mass said with a congregation and servers( rubrical procedures etc…)?

The GIRM says:
254. Mass should not be celebrated without a minister or at least one of the faithful, except for a just and reasonable cause. In this case, the greetings, the introductory or explanatory remarks (monitiones), and the blessing at the end of Mass are omitted.
So it is possible, but not to be done without just cause. Except for the differences mentioned, it would be like any other Mass.

In the good old times many masses were celebrated (in our parish over 10 a day) without servers. The lack of servers (there were 14 masses in every day) was just cause. There were rubrics how the priest is washes his hand or moves the Missal

Also that was naturally the Traditional Mass, and the blessing was made.

Naturaly the GIRM can change the law and custom.

There is no such thing as “the Good old Days.” Memory is selective.

I don’t think a priest can just “go and decide to say Mass on the side altar”.

depending on the church architecture celebration of the OF may be limited to the main altar

priests are supposed to say only one Mass a day and 3 on Sunday unless they have permission for more (at least in this Diocese I don’t know the universal law any more).

yes a priest who is, say retired, can say his daily Mass alone but ordinarily at least one of the faithful should be there to represent the people. He can certainly arrange the vessels etc so he does not need a server (more common to see daily Masses this way nowdays any how).

I forgot to say before, this issue was pretty thoroughly discussed a few months ago in this thread; it may help the OP to read over it.
