Dear friends, I have two questions
  1. This website (fordham.edu/halsall/source/1438sacraments.asp) said the following: The Council of Florence had made a serious mistake in its description of the matter of the sacrament of ordination. Following Aquinas it had insisted that the matter was the “handing over of the instruments” of the order in question. [Aquinas here had ignored earlier teachings.] Pius XII simply states that it the laying of hands which counts.
I don’t have time right now to research this, so I was hoping someone (and there are lots of smart people on here:)) has a quick answer to this. Did Florence contradict “earlier teachings” and Pius XII?
  1. I know the ordination rites by Paul VI deleted reference to confession and mandatory prayers about the sacrifice of the mass. Does anyone have or know of the prayers used in other rites or past rites of ordination which could help me prove that Paul VI’s declaration was “apt and sufficient”??
Thanks,
Greg Rossi

The article on “Holy Orders” in the Catholic Encyclopedia touches on this question in the section on “Matter and Form.”
