I own many versions of the Office:
Liturgy of the Hours (4 vol)
Christian Prayer
Shorter Christian Prayer
Lauds and Vespers (Latin/English)
Little Office of BVM (pre-concilliar) (Latin/English)
Little Office of BVM (post-concilliar)
I have also used some free online versions:
Divinum Officium
Universalis
Little Office of BVM
I’ve also tried multiple devotional series like:
In Conversation With God
Divine Intimacy
After trying each of these and trying to make them work in varying combinations, I’ve come to realize that you can get overwhelmed trying to take on too many devotions. You can also get things out of proportion if a devotion diverts you from fulfilling the demands of your state in life. You can also drive yourself crazy trying to find the perfect version of the Office. One version may be too complex, another too long, and still another too banal in its English wording. Latin can be nice, but if by itself, can be a barrier to prayer for those whose Latin is not strong. Latin/ Elizabethan English gives a good balance for me - sacred yet non-intimidating.
I’ve found that the best combination for
me is to simply pray the Rosary daily (Latin or English). I may try to read* In Conversation With God* if I have a free moment, and (only if I want more prayer time) get in a couple of hours from the pre-VII Little Office of BVM. I then end the day with a chapter from the Gospels (
Baronius Press New Testament DR) and Compline from the same LOBVM.
Again, the Rosary is the only devotion I bind myself to. Anything else is supplemental and optional. That allows me to have continuity
and flexibility. Also, the Rosary is a calming prayer with many, many graces. It is also humbling in that anyone can pray it. I found myself being proud that I could pray the LotH, and that became a spiritual stumbling block for me.
So, for what it’s worth, that’s been my 10 year journey through devotionals. Everyone’s different.
