organ donation

it doesn’t say anything about “organ donation”,

but it is ok with, and encouraged to donate Blood. Thus giving me the assumption that it is ok to donate organs. Really, they do not forbid it, so it is completely up to you.

But how do you personally feel about it

I don’t know of any official pronouncements the Church has made on this issue. But if you are an organ donor, you would be doing it out of a desire to help save someone else’s life. That is quite a selfless act and it seems like it would be something the Church would encourage.

There was a guy on tv once, that needed an organ replacment, otherwise he was gonna die, they did all the emotional thing with the music in the back ground. I felt guilty, cause i wasnt prepared to give away one of my organs, but i doubt that, in my unhealthy state, that any of my organs would have been used ( im over weight and unhealthy) but i dont think thats an excuse. The reason i was asking about it, was because, there was an episode of casualty where a jehovas wittness, was refusing to have a blood transplant. Her parents had to watch her dye, because they could not intervene, because of thier daughters belief. I hope that i will have the guts to go and give blood and donate my organs in the future. i feel ashamed of my behavior. God bless, give me a reply on why the j wittnesses refuse to give blood. 😦

If you don’t know what you’re talking about, why do you answer a question?

The Church DOES have an offical teaching on the matter. She teaches that “Organ donation after death is a noble and meritorous act and is to be encouraged as an expression of generous solidarity. It is not morally acceptable if the donor or his proxy has not given explicit consent. Moreover, it is not morally admissible directly to bring about the disabling mutilation or death of a human being, even in order to delay the death of other persons.”

CCC, 2296.
 
The Catholic Church teaches that the removal of organs that would “directly bring about the disabling mutilation OR DEATH of a human being, even in order to delay the death of other persons” is intrinsically evil. The Catholic Church regards the definition of death as being a true biological death, which include the destruction/cessation of the circulatory system (heart) and respiratory systems (lungs) as well as the neurological system.

There are two types of organ transplantation that are acceptable to the Catholic Church:

Tissue, a paired organ (i.e. you have two of them like for example, a kidney is a paired organ) or Bone Marrow from a living person The tissue or organ must not be essential for the life or health of the donor such as two kidneys
Tissue after death e.g. the cornea, heart valves, skin, bone and connective tissue (tendon and ligaments)

As I have noted in another thread…I sought the advise of the Church when my daughter was declared brain dead.
The Church is open to opinions from the medical community concerning brain death, and is open to heart transplant as well.
Because I was assured of the teaching, we agreed to the transplant.

I have noticed, especially after the Schiavo case, that people are confusing brain death with coma and pvs.
Brain death is a non-subjective diagnosis. The person either meets the criteria - or not. Two to three doctors must concur before death is declared. Once it is declared the doctors have the legal right to discontinue life support.

A person who is brain dead has no brain activity, no reflexes- and often their organs will shut down despite the ventilator.
A ventilator does not make a person “alive” - it only inflates the lungs.

This, of course, does not apply to those in coma or pvs, and those conditions should never be considered as sources for transplantation.
 
Many years ago we donated a Conn spinet organ to a small Church of God congregation. Does that count?

(Okay, back in my hole 😛 )

(For the record, I favor organ donation, and if when I die there are any organs in this tired ole body that are still useful, they’re welcome to them. However, SU and I have both decided that we will not ourselves accept organ transplants.)

Well, you can donate your pipe organ or an electronic organ. I’m sure they can use it someplace.
