What did the earliest/original habits consist of for benedictines? From my understanding, the Rule makes it sound like the cuculla (cowl) was worn with the at all times except while sleep when only the tunic and cinture was worn or while working when the scapular was worn over the tunic and cincture. I understand current practice in Benedictine monasteries, but was wondering what was done in the early and high medieval eras.
