In Origen’s commentary on the Song of Songs he says “Just so, as the different trees are understood in the Church as meaing the individual souls of the faithful, are the various powers and virtues of the individual soul understood under the figure of sundry trees.”

This is state on page 241 of the translation from the “Ancient Christian Writers” series.

He gives few are no quotes for his statement.

I am looking for biblical passages that we help me see what he means.

Any help?

I will also enjoy hearing what other saints have said about this, too!

thanks!

Hi Jim,

There are several references to “trees” in Song of Songs. I did a quick search using an online Bible. Nothing pops out at me that would lead me to think that Origen means a particular verse, but here are the different verses I found that might help you: Song of Songs 2:3; 2:13; 4:14; 6:11; 7:8; 8:5.

I hope this helps some.
