Totally agree. It was difficult to read but this made me scratch my head…
by the church, is meant, not an edifice of wood, stones but an assembly, and congregation of men; and that not of any sort; not a disorderly, tumultuous assembly, in which sense this word is sometimes taken; nor does it design the faithful of a family, which is sometimes the import of it; nor a particular congregated church, but the elect of God, the general assembly and church of the first born, whose names are written in heaven; and especially such of them as were to be gathered in, and built on Christ, from among the Jews and Gentiles.
So if Jesus was referencing a gathering among Jews and Gentiles in this passage that would mean none of the Apostles would have had any idea what Jesus was talking about here. When the Church replaces Judas in Acts one they still wouldn’t know what was meant by this passage. When the Church builds the entire way through Acts 9 they still wouldn’t have known. Only after Acts 10 would St. Peter have finally realized what Jesus meant when he said upon this Rock I will build my Church. Seriously?

I didn’t get much further because I think I pulled a hamstring just reading that paragraph.

God Bless

Hmm… That’s a good question. I’m sure most who are curious enough to look it up go by whatever the sources say
