When we suffer, how do we know whether it’s suffering for Christ or as a result of our own sin?

Sin has brought suffering into the world, but all suffering, no matter how big or small, can be offered up for Jesus,
suffering has not only been brought into the world as a punishment for us, it has been brought into the world by Gods mercy towards us, because of the great benefits that suffering brings when accepted and offered up willingly,
suffering is a means to return to God, and turn away from our evil inclinations, and even if we are suffering because of our sins, it is only because those sins have an effect on us, and by suffering willingly we counteract that effect(among other things).

well, i’d explain it further, but that’s all for now cause i have to go, but here is a very good article that explains suffering alot better than i can -

ok, hope this helps, take care.

I can’t answer your question, other than to say that faith developed through suffering was essential to my conversion back to the Church.

While in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel this evening I read an article in which Sr. St. Faustina was told by JESUS that when she meditated on HIS passion and suffering, that she pleased HIM and she gained great graces.
Many of our churches have removed the Crucifix of the Suffering Christ from the main church, and replaced it with the Crucific of the Risen Christ, or just the empty Crucifix.
No one has suffered as JESUS has suffered. There was nothing more HE could have done for us than that which HE did on the cross.
And HE calls us to take up HIS cross and follow HIM.
