I have a question - I understand that shabbat and sabbath both refer to the day of rest and I believe, to the original Hebrew word, but I’m unclear on why both of these words are used in Judaism and which one came first. From what I can see, the first use of the word sabbath occurs in exodus. I’m not clear on how shabbat came to be used. I’m curious b/c I think Jewish people tend to say shabbat, and Christians say sabbath, and I’m not sure why.

Shabbat is the Hebrew word, and Sabbath is the English word that is derived from the Hebrew word.

Shabbat is the actual Hebrew word. Sabbath is the English version of the Hebrew word. Its different in part, I believe, because the letter “sheen” in Hebrew stands also for Sh (when the dot’s on the right) or S (when the dot’s on the left), and in Biblical Hebrew the letter “tav” is rendered T or Th when it has a dot.

In Hebrew, shabbat literally means rest or to rest (noun or verb). It’s the verb used in the Creation story for the seventh day - literally, when God rested, he “shabbat”.

We probably use “Sabbath” in English because Greek (which is probably the first Indo-European language into which the Hebrew Scriptures were translated) has no ‘sh’ sound. This is similar to the name ‘Jesus’, which is derived from the Greek ‘Iesous’, even though the original name was probably Yeshua (notice the loss of the ‘sh’ due to the transliteration into Greek).

A related question: The word “abba” (father) seems to appear in the middle of the word Shabbat. Does anyone know if that is intentional?
