As Catholics, we do not necessarily take all passages of the Bible literally. More specifically, my understanding is that we may accept evolutionary theory as long as we accept God as the “prime mover,” i.e., life did not just happen by chance.
Much of Catholic theology hinges on Original Sin and our subsequent redemption, but if we are not bound to accept the Genesis account literally, does this not destroy the concept of Original Sin?
In other words, if there were never an actual, literal Adam and Eve, and evolution did happen, from where does Original Sin come?
