If Im correct, catholics believe we are all born stained with original sin, and we live with the consequences of a fallen world.
Orthodox believe we live with the consequences of the original sin, but NOT that each individual is personally stained with original sin.
As Orthodox claim to not have changed or developed doctrines since the times of the apostles, what was the belief of the early church fathers regarding original sin, and what sources do catholics under the auspices of Rome and Orthodox christians cite to support their position.
That sounds about right. Orthodox sources may say though that it would be a more complete understanding using the term “Ancestral Sin” vs. “Original Sin”. It was the sin of our ancestors and Genesis explained what those consequences were.
In Genesis 2 God gives the warning that sinning will bring death.
In Genesis 3 the Serpent says that sinning would open the eyes Adam and Eve to know good and evil. In Genesis 3 what the Serpent said, happened - their eyes were opened. Later in Genesis what God’s original warning was fullfilled, Adam and Eve did indeed die.
In Genesis 3:16 - 19 God more specific on the consequences of their sin: 16 To the woman He said: “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;
In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you.” 17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: “
Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. 18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field. 19
In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.”
The negative consequences are: 1. Knowing Evil 2. Physical Death (turning to dust) / Illness 3. Pain 4. tendency towards Passions 5. Domination 6. Cursed ground/animals (all of nature was affected in other words) 7. Toil/Sweat (hard work)
Each of us born after the Fall of Adam and Eve are born with into a world with this consequences. Jesus was no exception and neither was Mary. We know that they both experienced, at the very least, pain and death, as it is recorded specifically in the New Testament. The difference between them and us in this matter is the fact that they both chose to never sin! This is why Mary, who is only human, is so greatly honored by the Orthodoxd!!! Not because she was some “Great Exception” to humanity but because she is a “Great Exemplar”! Because she was born with/into the same Ancestral Sin Consequences as we all are, yet she conquered Sin by never giving herself over to it!!!
