We are often told that human beings have “inherited” original sin from our first parents. If sin is not a “thing” in the strict sense but an absence of the good, how can a lack of God’s grace be passed down so to speak through the ages?

If I had a million dollars in a bank account, upon my death I can pass that down to my children. However, if I lose the million dollars then my children will inherit an empty bank account.

In a similar way, if both two parents lack a certain gene then their offspring will be born without that gene.

Original sin is the passing on of a condition.
