Original Sin

The Dogma of the Immaculate Conception is brilliant, I think.
The theology behind it makes perfect sense.

I’m just curious why they (the thinkers of the church) would only have Mary
born without original sin. Is there perhaps reason that Anne or Joachim couldn’t also
have been born without it ? For that matter, I wonder if the theologians ever contemplated
that the entire genealogy line from David down to Christ could have been this way.
I don’t think it would take away from anything, it may perhaps show even further the
preparation for the coming of Our Lord.

Any thoughts on this ?

Some Early thinkers of the Church denied the teachings on the Immaculate Conception, both Doctors of the Church St Bonaventure and St Thomas Aquinas denied the Teaching.

The issue was resolved with Scotus publication of his Opus Oxoniense by stating that Mary required redemption like all others; but through the merits of the Crucifixion of Christ; given in advance Mary was conceived without Original Sin.

The Debate got to such levels of Hysteria that Pope Sixtus IV had to threaten excommunication for whomsoever declared the other Side a Heretic.

The issue was finally put to rest by Pope Pius X in 1854; defining the Dogma as “We declare, pronounce and define that the doctrine which holds that the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the first instant of her conception, by a singular privilege and grace of the Omnipotent God, in virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of mankind, was preserved immaculate from all stain of original sin, has been revealed by God, and therefore should firmly and constantly be believed by all the faithful.”

The most important element to understanding the Immaculate Conception has been emboldened. It was by the merit’s of Christ; given in advance, that Mary was conceived without the stain of Original sin.

It was for this reason that Mary has (so far) been the only person declared to have not had Original Sin.

Neither Anne nor Joachim Recieve this privalege; because whilst they were to raise a Holy Woman; they were not to raise the Son of God.

Well, Mary wasn’t the only person created without Original sin. Adam and Eve were, too, remember.

From a practical standpoint, having Mary be the only one “born” without Original sin (Adam and Eve weren’t “born,” they were “created”), makes her more unique, and that, in turn, makes Jesus more unique. That’s the goal, of course.

Could there be a misunderstanding of Original Sin and its connection to human nature which every person inherits directly, through many generations, from Adam and Eve as the sole parents of the human species?
