I have questions about Original Sin. Adam and Eve sinned, but were they forgiven by god ? It is often sited as a consequence of forgiven sin, but did Adam and Eve suffer the Temporal Aspects of sin like David did regarding the death of his son? It is said that we carry the stain of Original Sin and this is what is washed away by Baptism. This is a consequence of Original Sin or do we carry the stain of the Temporal aspects of sin of Adam and Eve and this is washed away as it is in the case of Indulgences. I know this is a difficult question but I hope someone can help me to understand these issues better.

I don’t believe the CC has a teaching on whether A & E were forgiven of their sins.

However, we do know that as a consequence of their sin, the Original Sin, that humanity lost
the sanctifying grace that was part of our heritage.

All systems in the universe are subject to entropy, which means they will eventually break down, unless they’re supported through a supernatural means. We lost that “supernatural means” through Original Sin.

I don’t believe we carry the stain of the temporal aspects of A & E’s sin.

I wish I could help but I am a bit unfamiliar with some if your terminology (Baptist here sorry). I do believe Adam and Eve were forgiven.

There’s nothing wrong with believing that. 🙂

Do you have any Scripture verses that tell you this?

No ma’am, most of it is personal belief. The Lord blessed her with children that she talks about how the Lord gave her Seth to replace Abel. And that their children were raised knowing about the Lord. So to me it seems that the Lord did not turn His back on them. Christ died once for all sins. So if they repented (we do not know but it seems so) the Lord would be faithful in forgiving.

That’s cool, logical and I give it a hearty 👍

Just 2 thoughts–
The Lord does not turn his back on anyone.

What you believe above, while I concur, is not found anywhere in Scripture; thus, I hope you have no objections to some Catholic teachings which also are not found explicitly in Scripture?

Aren’t Adam and Eve considered Saints by the Church? That means they are in heaven.
Their memorial was Christmas Eve!

God can forgive anything–even that.

Orthodox/Eastern Catholic tradition maintains that Adam and Eve were forgiven.

It is depicted in popular iconography.

The Harrowing of hell

Note that Jesus Christ is holding Adam and Eve by the wrist and pulling them out of hell.

The repented. The Bible mentions their shame when they hid themselves.

I like the way John Paul II spoke about Original Sin.

God has asked man to come into communion with Him. Since Adam and Eve man has continued to refuse.

This part we definatly know is true.

While there is no verse stating such…two animals were killed and their skins used to clothe the primordial couple…some believe…this was the first animal sacrifice that showed just how serious they had transgressed…an “innocent” had to die.

I agree the Lord doesn’t turn His back on anyone but He does turn His back on our sin. We believe this is why it got dark when Jesus was crucified. And when the Israelites disobeyed the Lord turned away and closed His ears to them. Of course He eventually relented.
And I didn’t know that Catholics had such strong opinions of this. What is the RC view? Or do you mean Catholic teachings in general?

Catholic teaching tells us that Original Sin passes to all of us. All have it and that is why we need the sacrament of Baptism. However, our sinful natures remain with us until we die. The Church also tells us that Adam and Eve were real people and the parents of all.

Peace,
Ed

God forgives the sins of all. Whether or not someone accepts that forgiveness and repents is another question-one we don’t have the answer to regarding A&E.

For Catholics, only the priest has the power to forgive sins as given by Christ.

Ed

Is going through a priest absolutely required or can you go straight to God? Blessings.
One can skip the priest if one has perfect contrition. --from pure love of God alone, but there is no guarantee of that because as human beings with a nature warped by the effects of sin over time, we are bound with concupiscence and cannot discern our motives properly. A&E were not since God made them pure and they did not have a dis-ordered desire. Their shame was pure, and in that, perfect contrition.

A&E are saints–the Church has declared it, thus “whatever you (the Church) bind on earth is bound in heaven.”

Would this apply in areas of the world where people are unable to get to a priest?

I heard a priest on Catholic Radio explain that we can’t do it. He now hears confessions at stop signs and other non-Church places. I know there will be people reading this who also understand that God may show His mercy on who He will. Catholics are instructed By God to use the sacrament of Confession, also called Reconciliation. Even the Pope goes to Confession. Jesus gave His disciples the power to forgive sins.

God bless,
Ed

Yes my brother, the thinking and teaching is the Sacraments were given by God as a gift. But that wouldn’t bind God to the sacraments

Interesting thought which I can relate to. Though I have been to catholic school, sacrements etc. I believe my faith in God bought “me” back to the church. And for that matter ideals of the catholic faith I struggled with, such as “Our Lady”.
