Original Sin

Catholic teaching tells us that Original Sin passes to all of us. All have it and that is why we need the sacrament of Baptism. However, our sinful natures remain with us until we die. The Church also tells us that Adam and Eve were real people and the parents of all.

Peace,
Ed
Hello ED, Since we Catholics believe Mary was free from original Does that mean when she gave birth to our Lord and Saviour she did not suffer from labor pains?

Thanks,
Matthew

I heard a priest on Catholic Radio explain that we can’t do it. He now hears confessions at stop signs and other non-Church places. I know there will be people reading this who also understand that God may show His mercy on who He will. Catholics are instructed By God to use the sacrament of Confession, also called Reconciliation. Even the Pope goes to Confession. Jesus gave His disciples the power to forgive sins.

God bless,
Ed
I respect what you all believe, though it is foreign to me. When I have sinned I go into my room and shut the door and kneel or prostrate myself before the Lord and ask Him to forgive me of my wrongdoing. I recognize that I am not worthy to receive (or even ask for) His forgiveness. But He knows how unworthy we are and forgives anyway. I am not in perfect contrition, but I believe He hears and forgives because the Blood of the Lamb covers me. According to the Catholic Church have I not been forgiven?

Yes that sounds about how it is for me today. I feel strongly today about all of this also. I guess what I’m trying to say, I’m one who received the test first and the lesson after. Not the way to approach all this for sure.

Yours is a very important question, so I refer you to the Library here at Catholic Answers:

I hear you. Not a far fetched thought process by any means.

Let me ask you, what brings you to CAF? Being curious or do you think theres more to Christianity than where you are at present?

I have a Catholic friend and we have been discussing different things. I was researching something she told me and this popped up. And yes of course there is more to my Relationship with Christ than where I am at present. I am ever learning new things. The day when I stop growing and yearning for more of His Precious Word is when I ought to be worried.

While there is no verse stating such…two animals were killed and their skins used to clothe the primordial couple…some believe…this was the first animal sacrifice that showed just how serious they had transgressed…an “innocent” had to die.
This might be a valid interpretation if all animals in Scripture that clothed the Israelites were from animals sacrificed as atonement…but that is not the case.

That’s cool, logical and I give it a hearty 👍

Just 2 thoughts–
The Lord does not turn his back on anyone.

What you believe above, while I concur, is not found anywhere in Scripture; thus, I hope you have no objections to some Catholic teachings which also are not found explicitly in Scripture?
In asking if I had no objections did you mean Catholic teachings in general?

Yes, there it is, school is never out. And yes I agree with PRmerger and in so many words was politely asking if the Catholic Catechism and Doctrine is of issue for you. Your thinking here would indictate to me it isn’t.

I like your heart, its for real. I get a good feeling about you in other words.

Sorry I was distracted.

I may not agree with everything but a lot of that comes from the fact that I am still learning. So I am thrilled to be able to ask my questions and share my opinions on things. I love hearing different interpretations on issues. I am firm in what I believe (the most important stuff—Jesus dying on the cross to save me from my sin) but other things I am open to being wrong. I really appreciate all the responses I am given.

Would this apply in areas of the world where people are unable to get to a priest?
My understanding is that in those cases (like rural Africa, I’m assuming you are referring to) have priests available–maybe not “convenient” like we have it here in the US, but they are available. In fact, I have a friend from Uganda who just went through seminary, and he told me that his family walked several miles round trip to church on Sundays, and he expects to be sent back to his village when he receives his ordination.

The MINIMUM Church requirement for confession is once per year. God is not bound by what He establishes as the “ordinary” way of receiving the Sacraments–He’s God. God is a merciful God, and He knows the heart of all of us. If someone wanted and intended to see a priest at his/her earliest ability, and yet passed without a priest’s absolution–God is not going to condemn a person to hell because he was unable–through no fault of his own–to do as is ordinarily asked of believers. God is Love.

A lot of people think Catholicism all “rules” and regulations imposed by the Church. That is not the case. Catholicism VERY MUCH expresses the mercy of God, and is not afraid to let us know when we really need to seek that mercy. There is a lot of guidance as to how to be holy–but the Church SHOULD be in the business of leading people to sainthood rather than allowing them excuses to be less Godly, or excuses for being lukewarm Christians. Don’t you agree?

That is the ORDINARY way of receiving absolution. But God is indeed sovereign and will do as He sees fit. I trust God.

You are doing the best you can to know Him on His terms…keep seeking the answer… God knows your heart–and in that, is the ultimate answer should you die without the benefit of reconciliation and the absolution administered through God’s priest.

The key is: are you doing the way YOU want to, or are you seeking/worshiping God as HE wants to be known? The answers are in the Bible, but it is my belief that the Bible–as a whole, not cherry picked–leads one to recognize the apostolic authority of the Catholic Churches.

an indulgence does not wash away a sin.

An indulgence makes a natural process easier.

You do not need an indulgence to be saved. Them that recieve an indulgence are already saved.
