Eastern Brother Rohzek,

Yes, I was not clear…but saying Mary was conceived without sin…essentially still means she is the Immaculate Conception…Latin brethren like things defined…
And what I am saying is that most Orthodox believe she inherited Ancestral Sin. The only difference is that she did not commit sin on her own accord. So we do not essentially believe in the Immaculate Conception.

Catholic Church: ancestral (original sin) is loss of: supernatural life and preternatural gifts, The preternatural gifts are infused knowledge, absence of concupiscence, and bodily immortality. Supernatural life is sanctifying grace, the loss of which is called the stain of original sin. Tthe Virgin Mary received sanctification from the first moment of her conception.

Orthodox: have read various opinions but one is that the Virgin Mary received sanctification at the Annunciation and not from the first moment of her conception.

That is a difference, but not a vast difference. If you have two people and one says that Mary was sanctified at the moment of her conception while the other says she was sanctified in the womb at some later point, they are very close compared to your garden-variety Protestant, wouldn’t you say?

Duns Scotus affirming Mary’s immaculate conception…very interesting read…Mary to be the Mother of God, whose parents had Original Sin…was in that much more need of salvation and redemption…at her conception…just like we have all our DNA at conception…
