Hi,

In Ezekiel 18, God says that “the soul that sins shall die…” He also goes on to say that he will not punish the som for the sins of the father and vise versa.

Islamic apologetics use this to say that the Dogma of Original Sin is not valid since God can not punish the decendents of Amam for his sins.

Also, elsewhere in the scriptures God says that he will visit the sins of the fathers on the sons for generations to come.

How do we reconcile this contradiction?

Hi

If they would read through even the Chaper of Ezekiel, they would see that God is making each person personally accountable for their own actions. Just as he does today. When Adam and Eve were on the earth, there was NO SIN on earth whatsoever, God created all brand spanking new and pronounced it “good”, going from Jesus proclamation that “None is good save my Father in heaven” we can see that the Earth was then very good indeed - perfect. Original sin came about and confounded all because of the first disobedience (something they should understand) of Eve and Adam which contaminated all - like dye in a glass of water. Adam and Eve sinned, then Cain sinned, then…etc. All the way down to Noah, which ended in Hams sining again. Hence - original sin started it all.

God said “Exodus 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God [am] a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth [generation] of them that hate me;”

Here God is saying His wrath will not depart from those who continue to defy Him, even to the 3rd and 4th Generation. Because notice it says “Of them that hate me” If one person in one generation feared God and served Him - that one would be spared…but not the previous, nor the next if they in turn defied Him, as Ezekiel stated.

Hope that helps

Peace

John
