I have heard it said that because of Orriginal Sin, man is evil and “hates God”. Is this the Catholic view?

No. Because of original sin man has a fallen nature (which means we tend to sin). But we do not (naturally) hate God, nor are we evil.

No that is not the Catholic view
if your search the CA homepage under “original sin” you will get 161 hits to help you understand Catholic teaching.
God loves all his creatures.
Man is good because he is created good, but he has the free will to choose evil, and because of original sin, has the tendency to choose evil, called concupiscence (disordered desire).

No, that’s not the Catholic view.

Original sin a lack of sanctifying grace. Adam and Eve are responsible for that because they listened to evil rather than listening to God’s commands. That’s what happens when one goes directly against God’s commands - we separate ourselves from communion with God. Adam and Eve were separated from God for their sin and when we sin (mortal sin), we reject paradise as well.

In baptism, that sanctifying grace is restored and we are once again in communion with God and are able to respond and cooperate with God’s grace in our lives. We can walk with Him in paradise. However, we still have the propencity to sin. It’s called concupiscience(sp?) - the tendency to sin. We have to fight against it all our lives. We don’t have a built in “hate” for God. In fact, God has put a longing in our hearts for Him. But, if one constantly goes against God’s will or ignores that longing, then their heart will become hardened to what is right and will eventually completely turn away from God. It starts out by being oblivious to venial sin. Once you can justify the venial sins, it becomes harder to recognize the mortal and then even that, too, can be justified.

That’s why the Sacrament of Reconciliation is so important because it helps us to recognize our sinful ways, even the venial sins and it helps us to recognize and avoid the mortal so we can stay on the path.

It is possible for a person to open up to God’s grace, even in the smallest way and realize their mistake and humble themselves to receive God’s forgiveness and mercy and experience His grace. But if one denies even this, then they commit the greatest sin of all - blasphemy against the Holy Spirit and that sin cannot be forgiven (if one is stubborn enough to hold to it until the end and not confess and accept).

So, no, we don’t have a hate for God.
