How old is the tradition of fasting from meat on Fridays during Lent? Where did it begin and who mandated it?

According to The Catholic Encyclopedia, it would seem that Pope Nicholas I implemented the decree in the late ninth century. Furthermore, the reason for it is rooted in God’s words to Noah in Genesis 9:4. Here are my sources if you would like to investigate the matter further:

The Catholic Encyclopedia
newadvent.org/cathen/01067a.htm
(Look under “Days of Abstinence”)

Catholic Education Resource Center
catholiceducation.org/articles/religion/re0703.html

I hope this helps.

Actually, its fasting from meat for all 40 days of Lent. Just Fridays is rather recent.

Thank you all for your swift replies. My question came on the heals of a protestant friend telling me that the fast from meat on Fridays was a political move by the Church to support the fisherman since Peter was a fisherman. I knew that was outrageous, but I needed proof. Thanks again. God Bless you and your work to bring the Truth to the world!
