From Asia News:

A 28-year-old nun was kidnapped and raped for a week by a group of men in Bamunigam, Kandhamal District (Orissa). She was held between 5 and 11 July, but the case was made public only today. “The perpetrators must be brought to justice without delay and the law must take its course. What happened is adisgrace,” said Mgr John Barwa SVD, archbishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneshwar, who condemned the attack.

The nun, aKandhamal native, lives in Chennai (Tamil Nadu), where she is studying in college. According to her testimony to police, she received a phone call from a woman about two weeks ago, who reported that her mother was very sick.

On 5 July, she took a train to Bamunigam, where two cousins and some friends were waiting to take her home. However, rather than take her to the village of Minapanka, the men led her to a still unidentified place. Here the sister was gang raped for a week.

Praying for her recovery, both physical and spiritual, and for the perps to be brought to justice.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

Amen.

PRAYER TO
SAINT MICHAEL
THE ARCHANGEL

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Lord, heal all afflictions endured by this servant of yours. Remedy her suffering with the touch of your divine hand. Lead her through the permeating evils of this fallen world close to your Sacred Heart, now unto the eternal kingdom of joy. Minister to her with loving angels. Have mercy, Lord. Our Lady, pray with us. Amen.

Lord, convert and bless with many graces any and all criminal perpetrators involved in this matter. Draw their hearts to repentance and heal them of sinful tendencies by the blood you shed out of love for your bride, the Church. Lead these souls with holy angels. Have mercy, Lord. Our Lady, pray with us. Amen.

This makes me really angry and sad. From what I’ve read about the plight of women in India, this seems to be too common of an occurrence, unfortunately. I think the government of India needs to do more, and the people, especially young men, need to be educated to respect women and not treat them in ways that we see way too often in the media. Prayers for the victim and her family, and yes, also for the male perpetrators that they will confess their sins and seek forgiveness/atonement.

As a follow-on, the following was published this morning in regards to the incident:

Card. Gracias: Rape of Orissa nun, act of terrorism against humanity

“I condemn this gang rape of this young nun in the strongest possible terms. This is gang rape is physical and emotional terrorism against our woman” Card. Oswald Gracias, president of the Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) tells AsiaNews reacting to the attack on a nun in Orissa. The religious of the Franciscan Missionaries of St. Joseph, lived in Chennai (Tamil Nadu) to continue her studies.

“This violation of our young woman religious - said the cardinal - is evil act inflicted on this woman religious who has consecrated her life to God Rape is an abhorrent crime and an abominable transgression against the honour of women and reflects abysmal state of women in our society, community and nation”.

Considering the dynamics of the attack, the cardinal stressed that “this wasn’t a random act of barbarism, it was meticulously planned allegedly as an act of retaliation and this heightens the gravity of the deplorable and utterly reprehensible crime.”

This is terrible. I hope she will recover and I will keep her in my prayers.

Absolutely heartbreaking. India has a terrible subculture of sex slavery and exploitation of young girls. I don’t know if this is the basis for this hideous crime but clearly there are some really depraved people. These attacks seem to be more frequent of late with women being assaulted on trains and on the street.

I pray this woman and her community can recover from this. Truly a horrible and cruel attack

And here in America, tongues scream “war on women!!” if you don’t buy them contraceptive chemical pills. So many women overseas confront hell on earth.

Our God is a God of retribution. Pray that those nefarious heathens be brought to justice! I am livid.

Exactly right. I remember someone posted a montage of photos of women around the world disfigured, tortured, killed, not allowed to go to school—below was a pic of Sandra Fluke an example of someone who’s lived a privileged and pampered life. The caption…What war on women?

I’m just horrified by the seemingly escalating violence against Christians and this Sister particularly was unspeakably violated. And we’re worried because someone going to an Ivy League school has to travel two blocks and plop down seven bucks? What a strange set of priorities.
