I recently started reading Orson Scott Carr’s book Ender’s Game. I am not very far into it, but I think I remember hearing something about how he MAY not exactly be pro-Christian. I am not sure if I heard this right or not, but it has me mildly concerned. Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks for any help.

Orson Scott Card’s “Tales of Alvin Maker” is one of my favorite series. He is Mormon, but I don’t let a person’s religion determine which works of fiction I read…because it’s fiction and a great story.

This reminds me. I need to reread Ender’s Game. I read it for 9th grade English class nearly a decade ago, and I haven’t picked it up since. :o

Thank you for the replies. I also do not let someone’s religion affect my reading choices. I have never read any of his works before and I thought I heard something about him being anti-catholic. I’m glad to hear that it seems not to come through in his writing if it is true at all. Just wanted to be sure before I invested the time in reading the book. Thanks again.

Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game is coming out as a movie.

Oh, no!
The book is excellent but I’m afraid the movie will have the same relation to the book the Starship Troopers has to the Heinlein original – none to speak of.

As for Card’s Mormonism, it comes thru at times but he also portrays the Church sympathetically in the Ender sequels.

I guess he could be, but that would really surprise me considering the amount of catholic characters throughout the Ender Series. (Though I suppose it did have several different religions represented.) There’s pretty much only one Mormon character. Either way, it’s definitely a great book. 😃

Carr is a Mormon and honestly it does not show until the later books in the Speaker of the Dead does it really show. I have nothing against Mormons some of my very good friends are Mormons but, it does show more as you read further into the series.

-It’s Card not Carr.
-Read The Polish Boy (short story by Card) for info on Ender’s Catholic Polish father. If my memory is correct it’s a rather pro-Catholic story.

Card was supposed to write a new Superman comic book series but gay comic book writers are attempting to blacklist him because of his religious views against gay marriage and abortion.

Arizona Mike!!! After reading your post I think this may have been what I was thinking of when I wrote my original post. Thanks so much for this. It looks like I may have misheard or misunderstood things.

I read “Ender’s Game” for the first time just a few years ago when my niece gave me the book. I had read a lot of SF but not this one. It was a good novel, (I think I might have ended it differently, though!)

Now I’m kind of ambivalent to hear that a movie is being made. Certainly it will be more visual and graphic, but I worry that it will have a different total affect than the book.

They almost have to take a very different approach. As I recall, there’s not a lot of description and tons of following the thoughts of characters. In light of the book’s style, the movie will almost certainly leave us with an entirely different impression. I’m sort of worried about the kids, too… No way are they going to get enough quality child actors to portray all these gifted little kids. 😦

I’ll watch it, of course. I’ll just prepare think it a poor substitute for the book. 😉

If Ender’s Game gives you problems as far as Christianity goes, don’t read the Homecomming series.

I read Ender’s Game (followed by Speaker for the Dead) when I was in grade school. I LOVED them. Later as an adult I read one of the Hegemon books (can’t recall the name) and the one about Bean.

I only found out later Card was a mormom. I then read his Alvin Maker series. I think it come out more in those.

Either way, I’d recommend Card. I don’t think there’s a danger of anyone reading his books and getting up one morning and becoming a mormom - no more so than one reading The Lord of the Rings and waking up one day and converting to Catholicism.

In fact, I’ve been looking for my copy of Ender’s Game for my son to read. Now that there’s a movie coming out - all the more reason.

There’s been rumor for years about a movie so I was surprised by the link edwest! I’ll be there! And I hope I won’t be disappointed!!
