Interestingly enough, the ACNA lists the 39 Articles on their website as something they all agree to believe and follow as an Anglican body. They claim to uphold them…
But not all do (as you know). Those more inclined towards Protestantism would probably adhere more closely to the 39 Articles; but those who have swung back towards Catholicism with “high church” worship, centered around the Eucharist, seem to have limited concern for the articles. The liberals seem to have limited concern for the Articles, too—not sure how they are going to work in the “same-sex unions.” Redefine the Sacrament of Marriage? Add an eighth Sacrament?

Actually, soon to be Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman did write an analysis of the historical/theological background to the 39 articles and he concluded that they could be held in a “Catholic sense.” In essence, the articles, where they part Catholic company, were a reaction to the authors’ own misconceptions about Catholic theology based on bad local Catholic practice.

I can buy that. I would like to read Cardinal Newmann’s analysis if you can hunt it down. I mean, the Church of England’s split was more political than theological. It was only later, to solidify seperation from Rome, that Protestant thinking began to influence TEC.
