Orthodox Christians-Are the Jews Still God’s Chosen People?

I have asked this question of Catholics, and realized I should have added a Poll for Orthodox Christians.

I would like to hear the Orthodox view.

I invite you to take the Poll and post your comments.

Thanks,
Anna

Catholics-Are the Jews Still God’s Chosen People?

Some Catholics have said that the Jews are no longer "God’s Chosen People,” and that Catholic Christians are the “New Israel.”

One Catholic Forum Member said, “Jews are no longer God’s Chosen People (Catholics are),” and “Judaism has been an obsolete religion for over 2000 years now.” He claimed this is the “Official Position proclaimed by the Roman Catholic Church.”

I know that some Catholics do believe the Jews are still God’s Chosen People.

I invite you to take the poll and give your comments.

I would really like to understand the Catholic view of the Jewish people and Catholic beliefs regarding the Jewish role, if any, in God’s plan of salvation for mankind.

Thank you,

Anna

I’ll just copy/paste my response from that other thread (minus that last sentence where I said I didn’t vote). 🙂
Of course another issue you have to think through is that modern Rabbinic Jews have as much to do with Second Temple Judaism as Christians do.
Christ himself refered to the Jews who refused the gospel as “illegitimate” (John 8:39-41)
Galatians 3:7 says only those who believe are Children of Abraham, and further verse 14 says that those who believe receive the promise, and finally verse 29 says that all who belong to Christ are heirs to the promise.
And though they may still be (mostly) decendents of Abraham, that does not matter, for Christ said that God could raise up children for Abraham from the stones (Luke 3:8)
Since the status of Gods Chosen People is something which is contingent on being heirs of Abraham, no. The Jews are not still God’s chosen people. To say they are is to say there are two paths to salvation.

So, do you believe the promises God made to Israel, no longer apply, in any way, to the Jewish people who have not accepted Christ?

A Jew who has not accepted Christ is no different than a Muslim, Hindu or anyone else who hasn’t accepted Him. God loves them just the same but they are outside of God’s covenant community.

Joe,

Thanks for the clarification. 🙂

I’m a bit curious about why we have several yes votes but no argument for yes written down.

I believe that most of the promises that God made to Israel were conditional - you obey, this is yours. You disobey, you lose out on the promise. I believe that certain covenants were irrevocable. For example, Abraham showed his faith by offering Isaac, and God promised him that his descendents would be more numerous than the stars in the sky. That promise was unconditional.

Are you saying the Jewish position as “chosen people” was conditional, and therefore revocable?

The question was whether the Jes are still the chosen people. That has nothing to do with whether or not a Jew accepts Jesus Christ. Jews are the chosen people, always have been since the time of Abram, and always will be. Jesus told the woman at the well, “Salvation is from the Jews.” God does a thing once, does it perectly, and never repeats Himself, and never makes a mistake. To suggest the Jews ae not the chosen people is to suggest God made a mistake, and that is heresy.
Whether the Jews accept that status, and continue to do so, is the issue. I would suggest the Jews always did and still do view themselves as the chosen people. That some did not accept Jesus does not detract from that, but does take them off the path of completeness of salvation history. Committed Jews who understand their faith and who find their way to the Catholic Church do not consider they have converted, but rather that they are not fulfilled. Rosalind Moss says that you cannot be more Jewish than to be Catholic.
At some point, there will be a massive converson of the Jews, and they will fulfill their call as the chosen people. Jesus said, when I am lifted us, I will draw all men to Myself. That includes the Jews. JPII had many Jewish friends and told them to be proud of their Jewishness. Yes, they are still the chosen people.

jdobbins,

I appreciate your comments. It seems Orthodox Christians are more inclined to say the Jews are no longer the Chosen People.

I have posed the same question to Catholics. Most Catholics are saying yes.

I am a Protestant Christian, and I believe the Jews are still God’s Chosen People. I believe God’s promises are irrevocable. I, also, believe there will be a mass conversion of Jews at some point.

I have Jewish friends. They tell me that Jews who convert to Christianity, usually convert to Catholicism. This is very interesting to me.

Friday night I attended a Hanukkah celebration with my Jewish friends. They do refer to themselves as Israel, God’s chosen people.

Would you post your comments here, also, and take the poll for Catholics?

Then as part of your belief that Jews are Gods Chosen people, I’m curious if you accept they have salvation outside of Christ. If not, what is it that makes them Chosen, in particular?

Just something to point out, but in the poll results, of the three who said “no” all have their religion listed as “Orthodox” or some varient thereof. While none who answered “yes” are listed as “Orthodox”.
Of course that’s so far. Who’s to say that won’t change.

“There is neither Jew nor Greek: there is neither bond nor free: there is neither male nor female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

Nine_Two,

First thanks for posting on the Catholic Thread also. Much appreciated.

I believe the Jews will eventually recognize Christ as Messiah and Savior, at a point in time of God’s choosing. So, I don’t believe they will be saved outside the salvation of Christ.

Thanks,
Anna

I don’t know if I’m orthodox but according to Paul in Romans 9 & 11 and John in Revelation say yes. There’s many verses in the OT that reveal God will always have a remnant of true believers from Israel.

BTW, it matters not what I think only what God says.

Dokimas,

Thank you for your comments. I am, also, aware of Scriptures that speak of a remnant of the Jews.

Good to hear from you,
Anna

Incorrect, IMO. Jesus is that path for all. The Tabernacle reveals God’s plan of salvation. Israel in OT times only understood as a shaddow. Jesus is the Lamb that was slain before the foundation of the earth.
