What is the current state of affairs with regard to Orthodox-Catholic reunion?

Hand-grenade close, or Intercontinental ballistic missile close?

Sometimes I am heartened by news articles, but then disheartened when I read the comboxes of these articles (usually something snarky from an Orthodox person)

Thanks,

Would be nice, but there are doctrinal differences, what would we believe if we were united?

Not until the majority of the Russian Eastern Orthodox stop holding anti-Roman views, and they put in the effort for reconciliation…

From what i understand the orthodox church say they hold the views of doctrine that was Established by the Apostles and early church fathers which was accepted by both sides in the beginning which was sufficant for salvation for all.
But then the Roman church started adding a numbers of new views to the doctrine. Why should the Orthodox church Accept these new views?

My impression: each side is making up for the old East-West hostility that’s been brewing for years by making outward gestures of mutual respect and recognition.

IMO the Catholic Church is more keen on and optimistic about reunion than the Orthodox Church, however, neither is willing to concede its title as The One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, its ecclesiastical structure, or its historical self-perceptions.

Those are some of the main problems IMO that keep reconciliation at the hugging-and-kissing stage and nothing really serious.

Im sure every Catholic here believes their Church is true in its teachings

If all Catholic doctrine is genuine and truth, and so is the Orthodox then what is keeping them apart?

Should Catholics be saying “hang on here ,the Orthodox rufuse union with us because maybe we teach error” “maybe we have to have a real hard look at our teaching and see if theyre wrong ,and change them if they are,so we can unite with the Orthodox”

But if they are all true, then its the Orthodox who should be the ones to have a good hard look at the doctrines and say" yes they are all ok ,we should and have to unite’

No Catholic here would admit or believe their own Doctrines are errors ,so believing they are true ,why do you think the Orthodox have a problem with them? What is their problem with uniting with Rome?

There is a ecumenical dialog in progress since 1980. And 2006 was a crucial year, and the current task is to define the role of the Holy Father in the first millenium, and the Orthodox must also define authority within Orthodoxy, which currently is not agreed upon (witness: Moscow v. Constantinople).

Follow-up question (I’ll also start a new thread as well)

How is the relationship between the Eastern Catholic (Melkite/Maronite, et. al) rites and the Orthodox?

Cordial? Filial? Acrimonious?

I understand there really is no such thing as Orthodoxy but OrthodoxIES, and it is probably not answerable completely, but in the aggregate?

Melkites and Antiochians unofficially share communion with each other in the traditional lands…

ACROD and the Ruthenian Byzantine Catholics unofficially do so in the US.

Chaldeans and Assyrians do so by treaty; limited communion exists officially.

Syrian Catholics and Syrian Orthodox also have a limited communion by Treaty.

Eastern Catholics say the Orthodox and the Roman Catholics are wrong 👍

:p:p:p:D

Orthodox say EC’s left their place in the one true Church, we just can’t fathom why! (I hope you all know we still love you though, and hope oneday that the ECs and RCs come back home.) Haha! :p:D

I wonder what the Copts have to say? Perhaps they are too busy surviving real attacks on their very existence to care too much about the grand East-West Apostolic marathon. 😉

They’re actually pretty close to reunion with both sides. And both sides are closer to reunion with them than with each other.
