I was just wondering what are your opinions on Orthodox chant? I personally find it to be indispensable as a tool for meditative prayer. My favourites are “Agni Parthene” and “Rejoice O Bethany”. Is it ok for a Catholic to listen to Orthodox music?

I’m not an authority figure, but I too find Orthodox music to be powerful. The only reservation I would have would be if there was a song involving doctrine that we reject. You would be hard pressed to find one like this.

I like the songs you list. You should check out these two:

“Now the Powers of Heaven” by the Moscow Sretensky Monastery Choir.

And, “Russian Orthodox Angelic Song”.

There are others I really like, but these two got me to fall in love with Orthodox music.

I love Russian Orthodox chants. Though I always check to see if they contain any contradictions to our faith. A great example of a Russian-style chant that is soundly Catholic is Rachmaninov’s Ave Maria.

Orthodox music is perfectly acceptable for Catholics to listen to. As a matter of fact, Eastern Catholics use the exact same musics in their Liturgies. So Orthodox music is perfectly “Catholic.”
