I recently visited St Sava’s Temple in Belgrade, Serbia. A Serbian Orthodox Temple. While I was there I bought some Icons, one of St Ignatious of Antioch and of St Demetrius of Thessaloniki. Both are Saints in both of our churches.

But I wondered if buying them was appropriate, them being Orthodox rather then Catholic. I also own a Greek Orthodox icon of Christ and Mary. Again, not being a Catholic Icon, is it appropriate? This might be a stupid question, I’d never gave it any thought on the past. It just struck me today that I might be doing something wrong.

I’m personally quite relaxed about Orthodox Churches, they are no different to Eastern Rite Catholic Churches in reality. But then, maybe I’m a bit too liberal. Anyway, what are other peoples views on this?

I can’t see the problem. You claim both Ignatius and Demetrius are Saints in the Catholic Church as well as the Orthodox Church, and what’s the difference between an Orthodox and Catholic icon depicting Christ and Mary?

A few minutes ago I sent in a post on another forum saying the Orthodox and Catholic Churches share a lot in common, more than Catholic and Protestant, and here you are saying that the Orthodox and Eastern Rite Catholics are virtually the same except in name.

Anybody who took issue with you on this would have to be very legalistic.

Mind you, I can think of one Presbyterian pastor of my acquaintance who’d probably foam at the mouth, but his opinion isn’t worth worrying about.

To be honest, I didn’t think there would be much of an issue. I just wanted to be sure. I’m sure there are some people who would find it wrong in some way, but I just wanted reassuring I hadn’t done some great heretical act or something stupid by naivety really.

Yeah. I think a lot of times people make a big deal out of things like this when it really isn’t. Enjoy them.

There is nothing wrong with buying an icon from an Eastern Orthodox.
