Orthodox Jews burnt hundreds of bibles in Israel two years ago

"It seems burning of religious texts is not something only confined to crazy fringe Christian leaders wanting to burn Quran’s on Spet 11.

In 2008 Orthodox Jews set fire to hundreds of copies of the New Testament in an act of violence against Christian missionaries in the Holy Land."

Apparently, it’s OK for Jews to burn hundreds of copies of the Holy Bible, but I wonder the tremendous amount of public outcry if even 1 copy of the extremely blasphemous Jewish Talmud were to be burned.

Have you actually ever read all 72 volumes of the Talmud…in Hebrew? Which Talmud? Where do you derive that the Talmud is extremely blasphemous?

Just wondering, because typically you find this kind of “anti-Talmud” rhetoric from rabidly anti-semitic web sites that falsely claim that there are “blasphemies” in the Talmud.

When one actually does even the barest amount of research, one finds that these passages are taken out of context, misinterpreted, or downright non-existent altogether. And the passages are typically culled from anti-semitic web sites on the Internet, and not from the Talmud itself.

The Babylonian Talmud is a very, very complex piece of work – Some 72+ volumes in all when translated into English. Hebrew is a very complex language, with sophisticated meanings embedded in the Hebrew text itself. Someone unfamiliar with Hebrew could easily misinterpret the text, especially if they had an agenda to defame the Jewish people.

To answer your question, it would be incredibly disrespectful for any person of faith to burn the holy books of any religion, regardless of one’s particular religious affiliation. If someone does burn the Holy Bible, we should turn the other cheek, and not respond in kind.

I don’t believe that anyone should be burning any holy books, but I am very confussed by your bolded quote. How is the Talmud blashemous? Is this not the same book that our Lord read out of?

Burning holy books from another’s faith would be just as evil as participating in the slander of another’s beliefs. We should be very careful that we do not participate, knowingly or through negligence, in spreading falsehoods.

Do you consider a book which horribly blasphemes, rejects, and hates our Lord Jesus Christ “holy”?

Ask yourself this, because every Catholic instantly knows the answer in his or her heart. Consider the fact that the Talmud actually states that Jesus is in Hell, being boiled by “hot excrement”.

That’s an interesting comment. Can you give any texts to back up your claims?

I’m interested because the story goes that Christians in the middle ages were falsely accusing Jews of doing horrible things to Christian children. But what if these Christians actually based what they thought on what they read from the Talmud?

I want to see the texts to see if there is any way Christians of the middle ages could justify their perception that Jews were doing horrible things to Christian children. Does the Talmud really say what you are perceiving, or is it a misinterpretation?

No not really, you can respectfully dispose of religious articles that been blessed (that are broken or unusable) by burning them, or burying them. So I guess if it can be done with respectfully with religious articles this could also apply to respectful disposal of books. It would be only “incredibly disrespectful” if it’s done out of malice.

We should inquire the reason behind it. If it’s done disrespectfully then you should admonish them, let them know it wrong to handle the Bible disrespectfully. Turning the other cheek doesn’t mean we should be punching bags.

Again, Emily, I am not sure which anti-semitic web site you are pulling this information from, but you are going to have to be very, very specific in citing sources when you are making these kinds of false claims.

Just for kicks, I pulled out my Art Scroll Schottenstein edition of the Babylonian Talmud, and looked up the third quote.

The third quote you list, Shabbos 104b, is clearly erroneous. There is no reference to Jesus Christ, but instead, to a Ben Setada, who used sorcery spells from Egypt by means of scratches on his flesh. Ben Setada lived a full century after Jesus, and was stoned to death by the Jewish court, not crucified by the Roman government as Jesus was.

Before you continue to make these kinds of false allegations, I would direct you to carefully read the following links that quite clearly and concisely refute your erroneous misinterpretations noted above:

Unless you have a thorough and lifelong training in Hebrew and the intricacies of Jewish scripture, you really should consult a qualified Jewish rabbi before making these kinds of false allegations on a public forum.
