Good thing the patriarch is more sensible than the monks of a certain monastery on Mt Athos. (now considered in schism from Orthodoxy)

I’m pretty sure those monks in question were forcibly expelled.

a lot of words of wisdom from the Patriarch pointing out to idle talking and so forth. but I still dont see the Patriarch point out to any solution for the union and what Truth is he talking about. I also did not like his enterpretation of the Church. it is kind of confusing.

This is going to be a very long road…

Personally, I believe Holy Mother Church should abide by Our Lady of Fatma’s biding, and consecrate Russia to her Immaculate Heart. Our Lady promises that she, herself, shall then proceed to convert Russia to her Immaculate Heart. It is my personal belief, thanks to the writing of some knowledgeable persons about the events at Fatima, and Our Lady’s work there, that Our Lady means to work in Russia a flowering of Faith that will rekindle all of Christendom, and bring about our wonderful reunion, especially Orthodox and Catholic. Obviously, the Blessed Virgin Mother of God is not ignorant that she is asking Catholic Bishops to pray for Orthodox Russia, but notice that both Orthodox and Catholic uniquely hold her in special esteem. Now the last time Our Lady so wonderfully appeared, she was at Guadelupe, and this event lead to the mass conversion of the Americas, so much so that today Our Lady of Guadelupe has been granted the patronage of the Americas, and has been styled Empress of the Americas.

The presumption against this is that the Orthodox may take offence to Catholic Bishops consecrating Russia to her Immaculate Heart, and that this might jeopardize current efforts toward reconciliation ; It is my belief, however, that she desires to work no small miracle in Russia : Her work there will usher in the happy reunion of both East and West - the very thing they both are currently striving for, whether reunion of the Church or a rekindling of Faith, especially throughout Europe, where the Holy Father himself has observed that

“…the ancient Churches seem to be dying,”

But,

“…not so in America.”

This is getting tiresome.

How many years will it take for most Catholics to acknowledge that their Pope already did this? The issue comes up a lot up there in the Traditional Catholic section of CAF, but rarely here in the basement.

What kind of union are you envisioning?
… and what Truth is he talking about.
Well, I don’t know for sure but if I had to guess I would think he means Orthodoxy.
I also did not like his enterpretation of the Church. it is kind of confusing.

The same since the beginning. from the time of the Epistles, there was no separation of the Church. this union can only be under the pope. If not, then you all going to remain just like protestant congregations, free churches.
the Church has been called the Catholic Church and not Orthodox church. how many times do you have to hear this to understand that the title of the church cannot change. Like St Augustine said: “when our enemies get together, they will refer to us as those Catholics over there.”

Yes, I know this belief is controversial, and, yes, I agree it is “tiresome” - for both of us, I suppose ; nonetheless, the controversy has to do with the specific request to i) consecrate Russia (explicitly) to the Immaculate Heart of Mary by ii) all the Catholic Bishops throughout the whole world (not the Pope singularly consecrating Russia or, contrawise, all the Catholic Bishops throughout the whole world consecrating the entire world to her Immaculate Heart, which only implicitly includes Russia).

He enterpretation sounds more like protestant enterpretation of the Church.
Apparently it’s not so confusing that you can’t label it. Either way, the Protestants are your children. Our Church polity has been the same long before the the Schism and long before your progeny the Protestants came on the scene. 👍

The bible refers to the “Church of Christ”, a term used long before the term “Catholic”, by your logic, the protestant denomination known as “The Church of Christ” is the one true church.

As long as Catholics insist on pushing ultramontane views on us there can be no union.

Joe, I’m not sure this is a fair characterization of Catholics as being the mom and pop religion of Protestantism. I understand the argument but am not convinced by it. The Catholic Church cannot control all heretics and their intentions and they cannot head off everyone at the pass. It would be absurd to say that Arianism and Nestorianism are the children of the East, right? Many heretics came out of the East before the Great Schism and yet it would be silly to somehow imply that the theology and agenda laid out by Eastern bishops gave rise to the heresies that flowed out of Alexandria or Constantinople, etc. I think it’s comments like this that are more damaging to ecumenical dialogue than anything. The polemics and labels aren’t helpful just as orthodox (small o) Catholics calling their fellow Catholics “cafeteria Catholics” isn’t helpful.

I would agree that the way Rome dealt with some of these heretics at times left plenty to be desired and possibly things like indulgences are directly responsible for men like Luther coming on the scene but to say Protestantism is the progeny of Catholics and that they are somehow similar bedfellows in a familial relationship isn’t fair. Luther’s overreaction to indulgences opened up a can of worms like the “priesthood of all believers” and “sola scriptura” that had nothing to do with indulgences. The “two sides of the same coin” analogy isn’t a good one IMO.

Didn’t know this was the Basement, Hesychios, but Ok…😃

Was that supposed to be a subtle “insult”?

Yes, the Pope already did this. 👍
