(Reuters) - A senior leader of the Russian Orthodox Church on Monday called on the Vatican to do more to resolve outstanding disputes so that a meeting between Pope Benedict and the Russian Patriarch could take place.

GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTT.
Let’s pray for that.
I dream of that day where we could unite without thinking about the “filioque”.
We need them. Let’s pray a lot!!!

They need to talk, it would be good.

On another note, I don’t think the article was very well written, but still it is a subject of great interest.

**But the biggest bone of contention concerns the fate of many church properties that Soviet leader Joseph Stalin ordered confiscated from Eastern Rite Catholics, who worship in an Orthodox rite but owe their allegiance to Rome.

Stalin gave the property to the Russian Orthodox Church but after the fall of communism, the Eastern Rite Catholics took back more than 500 churches, mostly in Western Ukraine.**

“Not very much was done or is being done in order to solve this problem,” said Hilarion, who is head of the external relations department of the 165-million-member Russian Orthodox Church and one of the closest aides to Patriarch Kirill.

“As soon as we have this understanding, we will be ready to begin preparations for such a meeting,” he said.

So is this about the physical buildings or is it about healing a 1000 year rift? If they won’t even meet until the issue of property is resolved than I question their motives.

It will be their property again in the event of a union. Why are they worrying about it right now?

What is important about the Pope and Russian Patriarch meeting??

What comes out of it? or can come out of it?

Do they sit in the same room and have tea and compliment on how nice or beautiful each others country is??

whats the big deal?

Lol, as much as some of the optimists might dislike it, I honestly think you’re probably right. I doubt that the Patriarch of Moscow sitting down to talk with the Pope will accomplish anything. I did, however, have a good chuckle imagining the Patriarch of Moscow sitting down with the Pope for some tea.

No, not tea. Beer.

Hopefully what comes out of it is the Pope says, look guys, we’re elevating the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church to Patriarch and you need to chill. Have another beer fellas.

With all respect to the many fine members here who believe otherwise, I don’t think Rome is withholding the patriarchate to please Moscow.

I think Rome has it’s own reasons, which are complex enough to fill several threads here.
