Orthodox parishes in Austin, TX

We are considering a move to Austin. From Googling most of the parishes seem very ‘liberal’. As much as I dislike the terms Liberal and Conservative for Catholics as I just consider myself Catholic - no adjectives - I can’t find a parish that has a more straightfoward Catholic liturgy and culture. Can you advise please? (I know that Austin is a more liberal city than most of Texas).

Also I see sisters from Mary Mother of the Eucharist are in Austin. Do they teach anywhere and are they attached to a parish?

I lived just north of Austin (Round Rock) for a short time some years ago. Loved the area. Central Texas (“Hill Country”), Austin and down to San Antonio…very pretty. Hope you enjoy exploring your new home.

Can’t remember the parish down there, but might suggest that you just attend your local neighborhood parish, make friends so you have some “neighbor-Catholics” that are close at hand, then explore from there. And, the more parishes and extra functions you attend, the more people you will get to meet and enjoy.

I love my neighborhood parish where I live now, but do like to attend the more “orthodox” style parish a bit farther away (kneel for communion at altar-railing, bow during creed, Holy Hours, etc.), too.

Its all good. Just be thankful you are in a country where there are parishes and priests are accessible.

This is a good reminder for me that we are so blessed in this country to be able to choose what church we attend!
 
I am not in the US presently, we are considering a move to Austin.
 
Most of the Churches here are pretty orthodox. I attend the beautiful St. Mary’s Cathedral downtown. It is very orthodox and liturgically correct but finding a good parking spot downtown, even on a Sunday, can be difficult. I ride the bus to Mass.

St. Louis Church is also nice. I attended Mass there for years.

Yes, the sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist have a school about 15 miles south of Austin. I’ve not had the opportunity to visit. I can’t recall the name of the school or the Church.

  • 1 on Saint Mary’s Cathedral; I used to go to Mass there, when I lived in Austin in the late 1900s, though for me it meant walking about 2 miles.
Near the UT campus, Saint Austin is run by the Paulist Fathers. While somewhat progressive in their thinking, the CSP are orthodox in practice.

Saint Louis parish is some miles north, IMS, and I have not gone to Mass there.

South of the Colorado River is Saint Ignatius parish.

At the extreme south end is San Jose; while in the “Mexican district,” the parish had an alleged Eucharistic Miracle in the late 1900s.

Austin is a metropolis, so it really depends on where you will be living.

I attend St. ignatius Parish- it is a wonderful vibrant parish filled with devout Catholics! The priests and sisters are Holy Cross and are fantastic. It is worth a visit. I also attended St. Mary’s downtown and it is very beautiful.
 
While I am not in Austin, TX, I do like to point out the Eastern Catholic churches in the area when someone writes that s/he is looking for a parish, so that Roman Catholics can gain some exposure to them. Check out:
