Hopefully this is the right place to ask. After years of resisting the desire to find god, finally taking the step of walking in to the church near where I live in West LA/Santa Monica, and several months of reading everything I can get my hands on about the Catholic faith and attempting to practice it as well as I can, I know that I am ready to become a Catholic.
I recently started attending an inquiry class and have some concerns. First, the parish is very (very) liberal and so is the class. In just a few weeks we’ve heard that women will be ordained sooner rather than later, that the church is wrong in its stance on contraception and that the proper response to difficult teachings of the church is to “use your conscience,” without them ever presenting the rationale for the teaching. This is all said with a deacon sitting in on the meetings, nodding along. To say the least, I’ve found this a little upsetting. Second, I find mass at this parish to be very difficult to get through. Masses are packed full of people, which is great, but after some experimentation, my personal preference runs towards the traditional latin mass, though I think a somewhat “quieter” NO would be alright. I was shocked to see what mass is like at my ‘home’ parish compared to what I expected it to be when I first walked in.
That being said, I can’t attend RCIA where the TLM is offered as all of the locations are at least a 45 minute drive away on sunday, let alone a weeknight. So my question is, does anyone out there know of a good orthodox/conservative parish or know of a good RCIA class somewhat close to west LA? Should I just suck it up and plug through at this parish?
I’d also be interested in hearing about other peoples’ experiences getting through an RCIA program at a parish like this.
