Orthodox response to the Church fathers on papal primacy?

I am venturing into the study of the Orthodox Church. When you refer to Peter, what happened in essence was that Peter was retracting from the vision in the dream he had that we are free to eat whatever we want. He was recanting a movement of the Holy Spirit. Paul knew Peter’s position and role in the beginning church and was calling him to stand firm.

There is a post that came on today about eating pork, and that the Jews were allowed to eat anything from the time of Noah. The thread goes more into detail and that pork was to be abstained as a punishment.)

I think the “hanging up” was more on the other side.

Melanchthon (after Luther’s death, as noted) sent the Patriarch a Greek translation of the Augsburg Confession. I have heard it said that Melanchthon translated the text in such a way as to play down sola fide and make the document appear more Orthodox, but I haven’t read the Greek text. Anyway, it didn’t work. The Patriarch said that the Lutherans were not Orthodox.

I don’t think the Lutherans ever proposed to accept Orthodox belief–rather, they hoped that the Orthodox would read the text they sent and say “yes, that’s basically what we believe.” The Lutherans were, of course, convinced that what they believed was the Gospel and the clear teaching of Scripture. They weren’t looking to change what they believed, but Melanchthon was eager to put it in as favorable a light as possible in the hope that the Orthodox would turn out to believe more or less the same things.

Except that would mean betraying a fundamental principle of Holy Orthodoxy, endorsing what could be serious errors in teaching.

I know, we Orthodox are looking like stubborn spoilers who don’t really want unity.

What should we stand for? Unity, or Truth?
