What does the Catholic Church think of the saints canonized by the Eastern Orthodox Churches? Are their posthumous miracles and/or apparitions worthy of belief? What about those who are rabidly anti-papal (especially the Pillars of Orthodoxy)?
For example, we can quote Mark of Ephesus canonized in 1734:
“It is impossible to recall peace without dissolving the cause of the schism— the primacy of the Pope exalting himself equal to God.”
“The Latins are not only schismatics but heretics… we did not separate from them for any other reason other than the fact that they are heretics. This is precisely why we must not unite with them unless they dismiss the addition from the Creed filioque and confess the Creed as we do.”
“We seek and we pray for our return to that time when, being united, we spoke the same things and there was no schism between us.”
“Flee from the papists as you would do from a snake or from the flames of a fire.”
As a Catholic, I find these rather offensive, if you will. As a side note, are there Catholic saints who are equally anti-Orthodox, as both kinds really do hinder our unity.
So, with what regard does Rome hold these no doubt virtuous, yet similarly anti-Catholic saints of the Orthodox Church?
