Has anybody heard and/or read the Orthodox Study Bible? I just bought a copy and I love it but I wanted to know if it is okay to read it?

I’ve looked over it at Barnes and Noble and it seems like a nice bible. Remember that it is not a Catholic study bible so the notes are not Catholic. This will be a concern when discussing things like the primacy of St. Peter and Filioque (from the Son), but its much better than a Protestant study bible since Catholic and Orthodox are not THAT different.

The text itself is good, the OT is from the LXX so it contains the entire Catholic canon and then some, however, the New Testament is the NKJV, it doesn’t alter the text, however in Luke 1:28 it added a footnote saying: *“Traditionally rendered: full of grace” *which is a really nice touch.

This is not an approved Catholic Bible, so I would not recommend this to be your primary Bible…
 
The very dusty answer to your question: In the New Jerome Biblical Commentary, there is an entry on Bible versions, and they digressed to mention that back in the 1910’s, the Vatican (possibly the Pontifical Biblical Commission or the Code of Canon Law) said that it was OK to read non-Catholic versions of the Bible, unless they were anti-Catholic. So, that is the general answer.

That subject was probably intended for Catholic scholars, probably not so much for lay Bible readers and students, but that’s what they said.

The Orthodox Church is very large, so that Bible probably has a very widespread reading. But, you should be careful of things which are anti-Catholic.
 
Well as far as I have gone reading the Orthodox bible, I have not seen anything Anti-Catholic except for the familiar One True Church statements, but even then it is not Anti-Catholic. My primary Bible is the Oxford Annotated Bible with the Extended Apocrypha/Deuterocanonical. Thank you for your advice.

I have used it. It is a great and very orthodox (no pun intended) study bible which is very Catholic. Of course they do present the filioque and papal primacy issues from an Orthodox Church perspective, but other than that, it is completely in line with Catholic teaching.

I would also point out that chapter and verse numbers do not line up in some of the Old Testament books with the standard Catholic chapter and verse numbers.

So this can cause problems when attempting to look something up.
