Canon Law, at least post 1917, made compulsion of conversion an excommunication offense, excomunicated by the law itself.

Therefore, the Ustaše were excommunicated. Effectively heretics.
Hmmm…so if the Ustase were excommunicated for the forced conversions why would the Vatican want to beatify Cardinal Stepinac?

Blessed Aloysius Cardinal Stepinac died from complications of his imprisonment for the faith and his refusal to break from Rome; a form of martyrdom.

He’s not the only Excommunicated person to have been sainted… St. Joan of Arc, amongst others…

From what I’ve read of Blessed Stepinac online, it seems the “forced conversion” canard was used by communists and other anti-Stepinac forces. But there is actually written documentation during the war that Blessed Stepinac told his priests to permit conversions to save the Serbian Orthodox from persecution, and that they were free to return to their religion after the war.

It seems he was a great man, and was even nominated by Jews to be regarded among the list of “Righteous Gentiles.” I don’t think latae sententiae could be applied to him.

Marduk

I don’t think Blessed Stepinac was a member of the Ustase.

His acceptance of the forced conversions (with the permission for them to revert when Orthodoxy was no longer allowed) seems to have been motivated out of pastoral concern… essentially Economia to prevent more deaths.

He’s a low grade martyr and a well loved and respected bishop.
