Orthodox understanding of Hell?

Hello,

I was wondering if any Orthodox posters could provide the Orthodox understanding of Hell?
I really want to understand this deeper. Perhaps some resources?

I heard a discussion on youtube with an Orthodox monk that said the West changed it’s understanding of Hell to an everlasting place of torment about the 11th century. And that Heaven and Hell are really the same place (not sure if place is the proper choice of word) just different states of consciousness. That God’s love (light, energy) becomes biss for believers and torment for those that rejected God in this life.

Either way, it still sounds like hell.

I do believe that is the traditional Orthodox understanding, and it is also the traditional Bl. Cardinal Newman (western ) understanding, and I think the C.S. Lewis (western ) understanding too.

My husband is Orthodox and i’ve had many conversation with his priest, ironically was a Roman Catholic till he married an Orthodox woman, .converted, became a deacon, then a priest. and that is exactly how he has described hell. they are in the ‘light’ the radiance of God, but it is extremly painful to those who hate God, or have made the decision to reject Him. whereas to believers it is heaven, being in the presence of the Almighty.

Well from what your relating to, sounds understood on two different levels to me. One, is the idea of being in a perpetual state of seperation, from a State of Grace, here on earth.

And the other the spriritual eternity of the soul?

I’m sorting of hearing two different thoughts in your post. I’m wondering if a misunderstanding could have happened?
