Yes, the service would be the Evening prayer service. Vespers is a very nice service.

Well, if you are going with an Orthodox friend, ask them what you should do.

If you wish to “appear” Byzantine, bow before entering the pew (that is if they have pews, most likely they will).

For me, I stand thoughout the Vespers service but do what everyone else does.

You will notice that we cross ourselves whenever the Trinity is mentioned. And it will appear backwards to you, that is we go from forehead to chest to right shoulder to left shoulder. We also place our thumb and first two fingers together and the other two fingers go in the plam when we cross ourselves. This is symbolic for us as the fingers represent the Trinity and the two fingers in the palm represent the two natures of Christ, Divine and Human.

You may also see others venerating Icons and lighting candles. Just watch and do what they do during the service.

Now if this ends with a penance service then go ahead with the prayers but do not approach the priest afterwards for confession and absolution.

I hope this helps out, let us know how it goes.

Thanks, that will be helpful. I am going tomorrow so I will let you know Saturday.
