Orthodox view of the Communion of Saints...

Question 2.

A well-respected Orthodox theologian, Lazar Puhalo, states very authoritatively that, after death, the soul is immediately judged, then, goes into a “repose”. It is sort of a state of semi-consciousness, if you will, until the last day. The day of the second judgement, when we are resurrected to our reward or, cast into hell.

If his speculation is true, how would this square with the communion of saints. He is rather unclear about this.

He even goes so far as to say he believes heaven or hell will not exist until after the second judgement, but, does not speculate as to where we are supposed to be, exactly.

Any illuminations?
 
I’ve never really read him, although I did recently attend a service he presided over, the honest impression I’ve gotten is that he is strongly rebelling against the idea of toll houses.

Having said that, my guess would be that he either believes that the great Christians who become saints immediatly go to heaven, or possibly he might believe that the saints are not bound by time.

But as I say, I don’t know what he believes.
 
Also be careful about calling him “Well respected” he is very controversial. I’ve encountered as many people who claim he’s a heretic as I have people who follow him. 😉
 
i believe our souls go to their proper place, heaven, purgatory or hell. then when everyone rises the souls and bodies are reunited and either go to heaven or hell. purgatory ends when Jesus comes. obiviously their are some who already have a glorified body in heaven - Jesus, Mary and some others from the OT.
 
Fr. Puhalo’s opinion is not standard Orthodox teaching. (Neither is the toll houses, which is also very controversial.) The saints are in Heaven.

The Orthodox view of the Communion of Saints is preached in every iconostas.

Probably because its wrong.
 
Wow, thanks for all the responses. It sounds as though both Archbishop Puhalo and Fr. Seraphim Rose are speculators, and that the official Orthodox view is essentially the same, only with differences in semantics, maybe?
 
There’s another thread (in the Eastern Catholicism forum) introduced in the past week about Orthodoxy and Purgatory, which is probably relevant to where this thread is headed.
