Quick Question…

What are some of the versus out there that support OSAS… Im not looking to attack or defend, just curious what scripture is used to support it…

John 3:16-17 " For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge, but that the world might be saved through Him"

I do not believe OSAS, but this is a verse that I am always hit with. Of course I have no problem with this verse as a Catholic because I believe indeed that those who believe in the Son might be saved through Him.

I see 2 Tim 3:16-17 used all the time: “16 All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”

Funny thing is, they sometimes neglect verse 17…

Dear Tonks

I am a member of a interdenominational Bible study and the leader of it had us rewrite this verse in our own words… Every signle person one way or the other put the word ‘suffiecient’ into their re-write, except for me of course because I copyied it down word for word as my St. Ignatius Bible already has it. When asked why I didnt put it into my own words, I said because I am already quite comfortable with the way that God worded it.

Something i have alwasy found funny about john 3:16…

Logic about this is simpler than may or must or might be saved

If you believe in him, you are declaring you beleive in what he says, if you beleive in what he says, you will DO what he says, if you dont do what he says, you are effectivly saying by your actions you do not believe in him.

In otherwords if you dont do what christ says we are to do (example Matthew chapters like 5-8 i think) you are declaring by your actions that you do NOT beleive in what he says, and therefore, have lsot your salvation… Anyway… only commetn i wanted to make, I am geniunly currious what other versus are used to support OSAS

The most striking reason to reject this doctrine is because there is not a single verse in the bible where it is taught, making it a self-refutable, self-defeating doctrine. In defense, many point to 2 Tim 3:16-17: “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, clearly, being profitable or useful does not mean it is sufficient] so that one who belongs to God may be competent. [or perfect] equipped for every good work ”.
Many assert this is the biblical evidence that proves the reality of Sola Scriptura. However, the “scripture” St. Paul here is referring to is the Old Testament, a fact that can be proved easily by his reference to the “scriptures” being known by Timothy from “infancy” [2 Tim 3:15]. The New Testament was not written when Timothy was an infant! [in fact, the notion of a “bible” was impossible to the early Christians because the Catholic Church did not yet determine what the Biblical Canon was. So what did the Christians do before the Canon of the Bible was determined!]. If we take St. Paul’s words iterally Sola Scriptura would therefore mean all I need is the Old Testament since this is the context which he is referring too. I doubt they know what they are proposing, but that is what Protestant evangelicals argue by turning to this verse for evidence.
